Introduction to R and R Studio [RSVP]
October 10, 2019

Come learn about the R programming language, and get a taste of how you can use R to explore, manipulate, and visualize data. This workshop is designed for the absolute beginner. No need to bring your own computer—we will provide a laptop with R pre-installed. We will end with a brief introduction to library resources.

Owning Your Omeka Workshop Series – Workshop 1: Getting Started with Reclaim Hosting [RSVP]

In this workshop learners will gain experience setting up a Reclaim Hosting web hosting account and begin to install their own Omeka website. Learners will gain exposure to using Reclaim’s CPanel and a FTP Client to later add plugins and themes to their Omeka site. We’ll also explore how to judge when to use Reclaim Hosting, Omeka.net, blogs.uoregon.edu, or page.uoregon.edu when creating a digital project due to technical and social contexts.

Have you been curious about R but hesitatant to dive in? Would you like to develop reproducible code for processing, cleaning, and visualizing your data? Join us for a introductory workshop into R, R Studio, and the Tidyverse package. Part 1 of a 5 part workshop series, Master the Tidyverse.

Owning Your Omeka Workshop Series – Workshop 2: Setting Up Omeka on Reclaim Hosting [RSVP]

In this workshop learners will gain experience setting up an Omeka website using their own web hosting space. Omeka websites will be evaluated to determine what makes them digital exhibits. Learners will gain hands on experience install plugins and themes that will get their Omeka digital exhibit websites operational.

Open Access Week Event: Open Textbook Review Workshop [RSVP forthcoming]

Faculty participants will learn more about open educational resources (OER), how to locate quality OERs online, and how to serve as a peer reviewer. Following the workshop, any faculty workshop attendee who submits a peer review of an OER on the Open Textbook Library will be eligible for a $200 stipend.

Open Access Week Event: Film Screening: The Internet’s Own Boy: The Story of Aaron Swartz

Free snacks and documentary film screening. The Internet’s Own Boy depicts the life of American computer programmer, writer, political organizer and Internet activist Aaron Swartz. It features interviews with his family and friends as well as the internet luminaries who worked with him. The film tells his story up to his eventual suicide after a legal battle, and explores the questions of access to information and civil liberties that drove his work.

In this workshop learners will gain experience with Curatescape, an Omeka plugins and themes suite that allows you to add images, audio, videos, and text connected to geographic locations. Together we’ll create a digital exhibit with location-based stories and develop an interactive mobile tour.

Introduction to Version Control with Git and GitHub [RSVP]

Have you ever wanted an unlimited undo button to track your files and the changes that you made? Don’t remember what your friend put in your document four months ago, but swears they cannot find? Version Control software like Git helps solve these problems. In this hands-on workshop, you will learn the basics of Git through the popular GitHub repository as well as the command line. No prior experience is required. Bring your own computer with administrative privileges to install the Git terminal, or use a library laptop.

Version Control with Git and GitHub: Intermediate [RSVP]

This workshop is designed for people who are still not very comfortable with Git but know the basic commands. Having completed the beginner workshop is a good way of preparing for the advanced workshop. During the intermediate workshop we will work collaboratively in a repository, solve conflicts, create branches, forks, and pull requests. This workshop uses the command line to learn git, but no previous experience using command line is necessary. Participants are strongly encouraged to bring their own computer but classroom computers will be available.
