Head of Preservation and Digitization – Washington University

 

POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Associate University Librarian for Special Collections Services Division, is responsible for the development and operation of a library-wide, comprehensive preservation and digitization program. Leads and manages all preservation/conservation and digitization efforts, including the management of general and special collection care and digitization activities, preservation/digitization lab and services, disaster planning and recovery, environmental monitoring, exhibition preparation activities, and education and outreach efforts. Leads staff responsible for all aspects of Preservation and Digitization.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides leadership and direction for a library-wide, comprehensive preservation and digitization program, including establishing goals, objectives, and plans, and managing budget allocations in support of related activities. Identifies potential grant resources. Develops grant proposals for library collection preservation, conservation, and digitization in collaboration with Library administration and relevant staff.
  • Supervises professional and support staff and provides overall directions for a diverse group of staff within a collaborative environment. Manages an efficient and effective team through engagement in strategic planning, assessment, and reporting. Effectively coaches, delegates and empowers team members to make independent decisions at appropriate operational levels and holds team members accountable. Leads the department by example, establishing workloads and procedures, delegating responsibility, providing guidance and direction, monitoring and evaluating performance, coaching and counseling, as needed.
  • Conservation, exhibition, digitization, and overall preservation of (non-audiovisual) materials from special and general collections based on current archival and conservation practices. This includes the management and coordination of preservation and digitization assessment surveys, staff and user education training, preservation and digitization out sourcing, environmental monitoring of collection and exhibition spaces, and disaster response and recovery.
  • Collaborates with Special Collections staff and subject librarians to develop preservation and digitization plans for all collections and to set priorities. Collaborates with Digital Scholarship and Technology Services staff on digital preservation planning that focuses on all phases of the digital life cycle in order to ensure long-term access to library digital assets.
  • As a member of administration, actively participates in Library Management Council (LMC). Participates in library-wide and university-wide activities, committees, special projects and programs, as assigned. Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in relevant field and/or 5+ years of equivalent experience.
  • Demonstrated experience providing effective leadership and supervision in academic library or similar setting.
  • In-depth knowledge of preservation and digitization standards and an understanding of emerging trends.
  • Experience with development and/or management of preservation and/or digitization workflow´s.
  • Experience working effectively with and collaboratively with peers, donors, collectors and scholars.
  • Experience building strong internal and external relationships.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to work successfully in an intensely collaborative environment with a broad range of people from culturally diverse backgrounds including colleagues, administrators, students, faculty, donors, and alumni.
  • Ability to manage professional library staff.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

DESCRIPTION
The Department of History at the University of California, Berkeley invites applications for a pool of qualified temporary instructors to teach courses primarily in the History of Science (broadly defined, including Science and Technology Studies) and Quantitative/Computational History should an opening arise. Screening of applicants is ongoing and will continue as needed. The number of positions varies from semester to semester, depending on the needs of the department. Positions may range from 16% to 100% time, which would translate to 1 to 6 courses over a two semester academic year.

The Department of History at the University of California, Berkeley, is generating an applicant pool of qualified instructors to teach courses in the History of Science, Technology, Medicine, Environment, or Quantitative/Computational History, pending openings.

Basic qualifications (at time of application): The minimum qualifications required to be an applicant are the completion of all PhD or equivalent degree requirements except the dissertation.

Additional qualifications (by start date): A PhD or equivalent degree in History of Science, Technology, Medicine, Environment, or Quantitative/Computational history, or related field, is required by the start date. Demonstrated teaching excellence in the appropriate fields with undergraduates and, where appropriate, graduate students.

Salary range: $53,402 – $58,945, based on a two semester, 100% time appointment. Starting salary will be commensurate with past college-level teaching experience.

In addition to teaching responsibilities, general duties may include holding regular office hours, calculating grades, advising students, preparing course materials, managing GSIs, and attending appropriate meetings/orientations, etc.

Digital Humanities PostdocVirginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences

The postdoc will advance the partnership in the Digital Humanities between the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences, University Libraries, and faculty and students across Virginia Tech. The postdoc is expected to assume a high visibility position advancing the digital humanities at the intersection of research, outreach, and instruction appropriate to a land grant university. The postdoc will have workspace assigned in the Athenaeum, the new Digital Humanities collaboration space in Newman Library. The postdoc will also have an affiliation with the proposed Center for Humanities to be located in the new Liberal Arts Building, as well as appropriate humanities department(s), including English, History, Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures, Philosophy, Religion and Culture, and Science, Technology, and Society. The postdoc will report to the Associate Dean for Research in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences, while working closely with the Digital Humanities Librarian and the faculty advisory group for the Athenaeum.

Professor/Full Professor of Information and Communication Studies – University College Dublin

University College Dublin is seeking to fill a Professor/Full Professor role in Information and Communication Studies to offer leadership to the School in its goal to grow its research, teaching, and international engagement. This is a permanent full-time role in the UCD School of Information and Communication Studies.

The School of Information and Communication Studies (ICS) is a member of the iSchool consortium and the only iSchool in Ireland. It is the only academic institution in Ireland to provide undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes leading to research and professionally accredited qualifications in Information and Library Studies.

The School investigates how information is created, organised, searched, and shared within and across communities, organisations and societies. Information plays a key role in business, government, society and life. Knowing how to create, manage, share, find and use digital information is more relevant than ever before. The School is the only academic institution in Ireland to provide undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Information and Library Studies, Information Systems and Digital Curation.

Applicants with appropriate expertise in any area of the broad field of Information and Communication Studies will be considered.  Current areas of research in the School include human-computer interaction, digital curation, cultural heritage informatics, data/information ethics, information architecture, foundations of information studies, information behaviour, data practices, digital and data journalism, digital media studies, and information literacy.   The successful candidate will be expected to assume the responsibilities of head of school on appointment for a period of 3-5 years.

Salary Scales:

Assistant Professor of Digital Media Production – Fort Hays State University

POSITION DESCRIPTION: Fort Hays State University and the Department of Informatics is accepting applications for an assistant professor of Digital Media Production.  The selected candidate will teach courses in the areas of Digital Media Production, specifically video production and editing. He or she will stay current in the field through active research and/or practice, and will work with department, college, university staff, and administrators to recruit students and to build industry partnerships for the purposes of intern and graduate placement.  Salary commensurate with experience and qualifications.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A Ph.D. or a masters with at least five years of experience in cinematic video production, broadcast video production, electronic news gathering, digital content dissemination, convergent media, and/or electronic journalism. Relevant industry experience may include: sports broadcasting, news production, corporate or industrial video production, digital cinema, or converged media newsroom management.  Teaching experience required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Experience with Avid and Adobe software and systems as well as experience with converged media (audio, video, digital reporting) is preferred.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:
The Department of Informatics at Fort Hays State University is notable for its innovative culture and successes.  The Department was built upon the theme of the movement and use of information. It has grown strongly over the last decade due to the quality of instruction in serving students and has substantial industry support.  FHSU Informatics currently instructs five undergraduate academic concentrations: Digital Media Production and Journalism; Web and Mobile Application Development; Computer Networking and Telecommunications; Health Informatics; and Management Information Systems.   It offers multiple graduate degree pathways as well as emphasis options in the MBA program. All together, the INT Department serves more than 500 undergraduate majors and approximately 30 graduate students in a given semester. It has plans to significantly increase the graduate program.  The department includes 12 full-time faculty, a lab/studio engineer, an administrative assistant, and several adjunct faculty.
