Technology and Digital Media Fellow – UNC-Charlotte

The Atkins Fellows program at UNC-Charlotte is an eleven-week paid summer residential fellowship for students at the mid-point of their Library, Archives, or Information Science degree program. It is designed to provide each fellow who participates with a work experience that is focused on professional-level tasks, with high levels of independence and creativity, while also supporting Atkins Library’s mission, goals, and initiatives. These fellowships are designed to give LIS students hands-on experience in an academic library.

Technology and Digital Media Fellow – Description:

The Technology & Digital Media fellowship provides an opportunity to collaborate with Research and Instructional Services’ faculty to understand the applications of technology in various disciplines. The Fellow will conduct research in the area of digital imaging and will identify and prioritize collections for conversion to 3D modeling. Possible scanning projects may include everyday objects, books, and/or textiles and artifacts from Special Collections and University Archives such as artists’ and pop-up books. The fellow will split their time between two units; initially working in Research and Instructional Services on Digital Humanities research and then embedded within Technology & Digital Strategies, gaining exposure to relevant technologies. The Fellow will become an expert in digital and 3D imaging processes and application through research and hands-on learning.

Preferred Education/Training, Experience, Skills/Competencies:

  • Knowledge of and/or experience with photography and/or digital imaging
  • Experience with graphic design programs
  • Experience conducting independent research
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent time management, analytical and creative problem solving skills

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct literature review and environmental scan of digital production workflows and technology applications
  • Identify use cases for implementation in academic libraries and higher education
  • Research, report, and recommend platforms and tools
  • Assess and identify collection/s and design high-resolution 3D models
  • Present findings at internal and external meetings and/or conferences
  • Generate reports, as well as present findings and recommendations to internal and external audiences
  • Help to define and model collaborative relationship between Research and Instructional Services (liaison/subject librarians) and the Makerspace/Visualization Lab in supporting digital media projects

Full professor ‘Simulation’ – Tilburg University

The Tilburg School of Humanities and Digital Sciences seeks to appoint a full professor ‘Simulation’, with the Department of Cognitive Science & Artificial Intelligence. As a position created in the context of the Philip Eijlander Diversity Program, the full professorship is open to women only.

‘Simulation’

The successful candidate is engaged in research and education on simulations and models in different domains and for different applications, which may include one or more of the following fields:

  • Social simulations, i.e., simulations of social networks and social interactions to gain new insights in how individuals and groups behave, interact, and come to decisions;
  • Training simulations, i.e., simulations used by industries and governmental institutes to train and educate people, including the use of virtual and augmented reality and computer games;
  • Process simulations, i.e., model-based representations of biological and mental processes, to gain insights into behavior, to construct imitations of behaviors in software and robots, and to investigate interaction between people in, for instance, the healthcare domain;

The department is strongly involved in the Mind Labs initiative at the Spoorzone of Tilburg (www.mind-labs.eu), the DAF Technology Lab for virtual and mixed reality (https://www.tilburguniversity.edu/campus/experiencing-virtual-reality), and the Jheronimus Academy of Data Science (JADS) in Den Bosch (www.jads.nl).

The successful candidate should have affinity with cognitive science and/or artificial intelligence. The candidate is expected to collaborate with industrial partners on projects, and participate in at least one of the labs of Mind Labs. Involvement with the DAF Technology Lab and/or JADS is also possible and encouraged. The candidate will teach in the Cognitive Science & Artificial Intelligence bachelor and master program, and/or the Data Science in Society master program. Through her research, the candidate will participate in ‘Creating Value from Data’, one of the research and impact themes of Tilburg University. The specific name of the position can be adjusted, depending on the expertise and preferences of the candidate to be appointed.

  • A doctorate and substantial experience and outstanding performance in university education and research, shown by CV, teaching evaluations and relevant publications;
  • Ideas on education and on research relevant to the Department of Cognitive Science & Artificial Intelligence;

  • Experience with grant applications, and preferably also successes in this area;

Employment terms and conditions

Depending on experience, record, and current position, the appointment may be for five years with the perspective of appointment for an indefinite period thereafter, or immediately for an indefinite period. We look for a full time or almost fulltime colleague (0.8 – 1.0 fte). The selected candidate will be ranked in the Dutch university employment system as full professor (“Hoogleraar 2”). The gross salary depends on qualifications and experience and ranges between € 5,334.- and € 7,766.- per month for a full time employment of 38 hours per week. The salary is supplemented with an annual holiday pay and an end-of-year bonus. Candidates from outside the Netherlands may qualify for a temporary tax-free allowance equal to 30% of their taxable salary. The university will apply for such an allowance on their behalf. In the context of the Philip Eijlander Diversity Program, the candidate will have a start-up research grant of 10,000 euro. If the candidate does not speak Dutch yet, a sufficient passive understanding of Dutch will have to be acquired within two year after appointment. Associate professor ‘Digital Culture’ – Tilburg University

The Tilburg School of Humanities and Digital Sciences seeks to appoint an associate professor ‘Digital Culture’, with the Department of Culture Studies. As a position created in the context of the Philip Eijlander Diversity Program this position is open to women only.

‘Digital Culture’

We are looking for a colleague with a strong profile in the study of the impact of digitalization and globalization on culture and society. The new colleague will help develop and implement the undergraduate program ‘Online Culture’, which is closely integrated with the online magazine Diggit Magazine, which recently received the Educational Innovation Prize of Tilburg University. The colleague will also be involved in the development of the related master program, in research and in the supervision of PhD candidates.

Among the topics that the new colleague might address in teaching and research, are:

  • Digital media, participation and citizenship
  • (Digital) media theory
  • Critical software studies; algorithmic culture
  • Media and social justice; digital inclusion/exclusion
  • Media literacies, digital literacies
  • Digital media arts, aesthetics and activism

All these topics relate to digital media and the resilient society, and thus to ‘Empowering the Resilient Society’, one of the impact themes of Tilburg University.

Postdoctoral Scholar – Penn State Humanities Institute

The Penn State Humanities Institute has embarked on a Public Humanities Initiative whereby we plan to engage in production and presentation of a multi-platform, multi-media web series featuring portrayals and discussions of socially relevant issues that center on questions of the human condition. These broadcasts will be produced in video format with a corresponding podcast series, with multiple episodes per year. These productions will require scholarly background research, interviews with scholars, and/or video-sound production expertise. In support of this initiative, the Penn State Humanities Institute has received funding for a post-doctoral scholar who will assist in the research and/or production of these broadcasts. She or he will be an active member of our team in planning and producing the episodes. Possible job responsibilities include working with the production team for script development; working with/overseeing a Graduate Research Assistant on issues of research, identifying supporting material, fact-checking, FCC requirements, and securing copyright and security clearances as needed; identifying, communicating with, and interacting with interviewees; editing interview material for both television and podcast formats; managing schedules and calendars for pre-through-post production; overseeing budget use. Exact responsibilities will be determined depending on the particular skill set of the candidate. The Humanities Institute welcomes applications from scholars who have received their terminal degrees (PhD for the humanities; MFA if appropriate for others) within the past three years (after May 1, 2014). Scholars in EITHER general humanities OR television or documentary production are invited to apply, and scholars with expertise in both will be looked at especially favorably. Terminal degrees must be in hand by July 1, 2018. Applications should include (1) a CV, (2) contact information for two references, and (3) a cover letter describing how you might be suited for the position and detailing your area(s) of expertise and training. The successful candidate will be asked to contribute to research and/or production for our Initiative. Further, it is expected that the scholar will be in residence at the Humanities Institute for the full year and take part in the intellectual life of campus by working with faculty and students, attending symposia and events, and contributing to meetings and discussions presented by Humanities Institute. The scholarship stipend is $48,900 plus benefits and a $4,000 research fund. An office will be provided at the Institute.
