Postdoctoral Fellow – Global Media Studies Initiative – University of Michigan

The Global Media Studies Initiative (GMSI) in the Department of Communication Studies at the University of Michigan invites candidates for a postdoctoral research fellowship.  This is a one-year, term-limited position with a possibility of renewal for a second year.

Applications are welcome from scholars whose research addresses the global impact of media and communication technologies, cultures, and industries in a comparative and historical fashion.  This position is an ideal opportunity for a scholar whose work is rooted in media and communication studies, and draws on cultural anthropology, sociology, science and technology studies, and other cognate disciplines.  The postdoctoral fellow will be affiliated primarily with the Department of Communication Studies and will work closely with faculty and students in the Global Media Studies Initiative.

Fellowship Details
This is a 100% effort position and it is expected there will be a combination of research and teaching during this appointment.  The position is expected to begin no later than September 1, 2018.
During this appointment the selected candidate is expected to help program and manage the research activities of the Global Media Studies Initiative, and to be an active participant in the academic activities of the initiative. If the appointment is renewed for a second year, the selected candidate will have the opportunity to deliver one public lecture.
The salary range is $48,000 to $50,000 depending on qualifications. In addition, the Fellow is eligible to apply for up to $2,000 per year to fund research and conference travel, and will receive $2,000 taxable payment to assist in the relocation to the Ann Arbor area. This is a full-time, benefits-eligible position.

Postdoctoral Fellowship in Digital Culture – Washington University

Washington University in St. Louis, American Culture Studies
The Program in American Culture Studies (AMCS) at Washington University in St. Louis invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Digital Cultures, renewable annually for up to two years contingent upon satisfactory performance; expected start date is July 1, 2018.  AMCS is an endowed program in Arts & Sciences that fosters cross-disciplinary intellectual exchange and transformative scholarship at the intersections of the humanities and social sciences. It offers an undergraduate major, a Ph.D. certificate program, a Master’s program, and a wide array of collaborative research and teaching activities, seeking to build community among students of American culture from many fields.

We are particularly interested in applicants, academics and/or practitioners, whose research, teaching, and practice (1) have a strong theoretical awareness, but at the same time deeply engage ethnographic, material, and/or historical particulars; (2) center on an historically-informed study of digital cultures, broadly defined, especially as they pertain to media as a site of cultural production; (3) engage the digital transformation of media and the public sphere, as it pertains to the history of political economy and power, and matters of identity, membership, and exclusion.  We prefer applicants who engage digital cultures as a subject of study, and not only as a research or presentation methodology.

Candidates must have received the Ph.D. since July 1, 2014, or be scheduled to defend the dissertation before July 1, 2018.  The Fellow will receive a salary of $55,000 per year, plus benefits and a $3,000 annual research/travel stipend.

Assistant/Associate Professor in Digital Methods in History –Aarhus University

The Department of History and Classical Studies at the School of Culture and Society invites applications for the position of assistant/associate professor in digital methods in history.

The assistant professorship is a three-year fixed-term position. After three years, and subject to appropriate funding, an associate professorship in the same subject area will be announced in open competition. The associate professorship is a permanent position.

The position
We are looking for an enthusiastic, dedicated researcher and teacher who is willing and able to contribute to the activities of the Department of History and Classical Studies, with an emphasis on the field of digital methods in history.
The Department of History and Classical Studies has decided to strengthen its competences in digital methods in research and teaching, and is therefore establishing this new position. The successful applicant will be expected to further the use of digital methods in history through their own research and teaching. They will also be expected to contribute to the enhancement of competences in digital methods among colleagues in the department. Research
Applicants must possess the qualifications and ambitions necessary to develop research in the field of digital methods within a history department. The application should present applicants’ future research plans, including plans for how they can develop and promote the utilisation of existing collections of digitised material in Denmark and beyond. This could be done, for example, in collaboration with the Royal Danish Library or the Danish National Archives, but could also include institutions outside Denmark.

Qualifications in programming and related skills are an advantage but not a requirement, and applicants are encouraged to document any relevant qualifications of this nature.

The Department of History and Classical Studies and the School of Culture and Society attach great importance to the development of a dynamic international research profile with the focus on research of the highest quality. Teaching

If an assistant professor is appointed, the successful applicant will be obliged to complete a course in university teaching especially designed for assistant professors.

Knowledge exchange
The successful applicant will be expected to have an interest in (and preferably documented experience of) knowledge exchange with society in relation to this area of research and according to the level of seniority applied for.

Talent development
If an associate professor is appointed, the successful applicant will be expected to attract and supervise PhD students and contribute to the development and implementation of PhD courses within this subject field.

The academic environment
The researchers and PhD students in history at Aarhus University concern themselves with history in many forms, primarily political history, cultural history and social history. Research especially comprises the history of Denmark and Europe, from Antiquity to the present day. Research projects are usually limited to specific historical periods and geographical regions, but characteristically the work traverses conventional chronological and geographical boundaries. Researchers participate in a variety of national and international research environments.

Both Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes in history are offered. The Bachelor’s degree programme includes survey courses in Danish and world history, historical methodology, the uses of history, and courses in various historical topics. The Master’s degree programme is offered in the form of three different tracks: a track for those aiming at upper-secondary school teaching, a cultural history track, and a track comprising global and international history. In addition, a number of elective subjects are offered at both Bachelor’s and Master’s degree levels. The department also has a large number of PhD students and shares a joint research training programme for PhD students with the Department of Archaeology.

Digital Research Fellow – Before Farm to Table – Folger Shakespeare Library

The Folger Shakespeare Library seeks to hire three post-doctoral fellows for a multi-year collaborative and cross-disciplinary research project entitled “Before ‘Farm to Table’: Early Modern Foodways and Cultures.” This is the inaugural project in the Folger Shakespeare Library’s Mellon Initiative in Collaborative Research. It is headquartered in the Folger Institute, whose mission is to foster vital research questions, gather knowledge communities, and stimulate collections-based research. The Folger Shakespeare Library is home to the world’s largest Shakespeare collection and supports research on all aspects of British, European, and Atlantic world literary, cultural, political, religious, theatrical, and social history from the fifteenth through the eighteenth centuries. “Before ‘Farm to Table’: Early Modern Foodways and Cultures” will investigate the pervasiveness of food in everyday life as a window into early modern culture, addressing such issues as labor, freedom and enslavement, practical knowledge, ethics, and imagination. These perspectives from a pre-industrial world will shed light on critical post-industrial dilemmas and aspirations. The positions are renewable for three academic years (through June 2021).

Applicants must hold a recent (within 5 years) Ph.D. in early modern (c. 1450-1750) studies; specific disciplines may include art history, anthropology, food studies, history, literature, philosophy. A successful candidate will bring his or her own individual research to bear on collective decisions about projects in this innovative research initiative. The three post-doctoral fellows will work closely with the project’s co-directors and will be responsible for defining and pursuing research agendas, helping to select short-term fellows and other project associates, and creating scholarly and public programs as well as print and online products. We aim to assemble an interdisciplinary team of post-docs with a diversity of cognate interests and approaches, who will engage in independent and collaborative research, writing, and experimentation. Post-docs will share their findings in a variety of formats and with a variety of audiences, assist with organizing scholarly programs and public events at the Folger, and contribute to online digital projects and exhibitions. Additional information on the specific post-docs and a link to detailed descriptions and application instructions are included below.

The three post-doctoral fellows will be considered employees of the Folger and will receive a generous salary of $5,416.67 per month (equivalent to 65K per year) and a comprehensive benefits package. Housing and/or relocation assistance cannot be provided. Six months of paid individual research and writing time is included, and there will be specific opportunities provided throughout the post-doc period to participate in scholarly conferences and events.

Digital Research Fellow (one fellowship available):
The Digital Research Fellow will be tasked with developing, building, and trialing a structure for accessing and researching texts, images, and metadata relating to the major themes of the project, with an emphasis on the Folger’s unique collection of food-related manuscripts. Working closely with co-directors and Folger stakeholders, the post-doc will help establish and implement editorial and mark-up conventions for creating a searchable corpus of food-related texts and images. The corpus will provide quantitative and qualitative data for the team’s innovative explorations of a wide range of issues in food pathways and cultures of the period through a variety of techniques, including data mining, data visualization, mapping, network analysis, and text analysis.

Demonstrated knowledge and experience with technologies and standards used in digital humanities scholarship such as TEI markup, data visualization, text and network analysis, and common scripting languages, is required. Relevant experience in developing and leading digital humanities research projects is preferred. Applicants should be able to read and transcribe English secretary hand at an advanced level and mark up texts according to TEI: P5 guidelines. Ability to work in a team environment where consultation, flexibility, creativity, and cooperation is essential, as is the ability to manage multiple priorities and tasks.

Assistant Professor of New Media – Purchase College

The New Media program in the School of Film and Media Studies at Purchase College seeks candidates for a tenure-track Assistant Professor, beginning Fall 2018. The successful candidate will teach research-based media arts within the undergraduate New Media curriculum as well as the schools new MFA in Media Arts and Culture. Candidates should articulate how their practice could also contribute to our programs in the School of Art+Design. Specializations could include, but are not limited to, time-based installation, critical or speculative design, media installation, social software and mobile media, AR/VR/MR and other emerging fields. Teaching responsibilities will include courses that are a combination of undergraduate foundation classes (specifically in design or in video), general education courses available to non-majors, upper-level electives, and graduate-level coursework tailored to the successful candidates area of specialization. A terminal degree (MFA) in a studio discipline or related field is required. A PhD with will also be considered if the candidate has an active media arts practice. Metadata Editor/Digital Project Librarian – German Historical Institute – Washington, D.C.

The German Historical Institute Washington DC (part of the Max Weber Foundation – International Humanities in Bonn, Germany) seeks to fill the following full-time, three-year, grant-funded position from February 2018 to January 2021

The applicant will support the relaunch and expansion of the GHI’s flagship digital project, German History in Documents and Images/Deutsche Geschichte in Dokumenten und Bildern.

Responsibilities
The Metadata Editor/Digital Project Librarian will assist in the migration of all legacy data (historical documents, images, and maps) from the project’s existing infrastructure to a new, customized, open-source publication platform designed for interdisciplinary humanities projects. The Metadata Editor/Digital Project Librarian will be responsible for the enrichment, in accordance with best practices in the digital humanities and information sciences, of all legacy data as well as all new historical sources, including multimedia files. In addition to contributing to the hands-on data enrichment and TEI markup work, the Metadata Editor/Digital Project Librarian will supervise students and volunteers involved in these work processes. Additionally, the Metadata Editor/Digital Project Librarian will: assist with the acquisition and copyright permission processes for new sources (texts and document facsimiles as well as images and multimedia files); correspond with libraries, archives, and other institutional partners; assist with source-related research, as needed; and contribute to source digitization.

Preferred Qualifications

  • M.A. in library science/information science or digital humanities and at least three years of relevant professional experience
  • Understanding of current issues in data use, curation, and management
  • Familiarity with historical projects, research, and sources
  • Ability to understand content structures and key metadata and their uses by researchers, teachers, and students
  • Knowledge of cataloging rules and standards, controlled vocabularies, controlled formats; knowledge of LC subject headings and classification schedules and authority control
  • Knowledge of resource description standards and formats; familiarity with non-MARC metadata standards and schemas, such as Dublin Core, MODS, METS, and TEI
  • Understanding of linked data principles, including RDF and ontologies
  • Ability to review XML, XHTML, and other markup
  • Experience migrating and remediating legacy metadata
  • Experience supervising staff, especially student workers
  • Experience with OCR software or other transcription methods
  • Experience with copyright acquisition processes, especially for digital projects
  • Flexibility and a willingness to shift directions, as needed

Seattle University: Instructor, Digital Technology and Cultures

The School of New and Continuing Studies at Seattle University invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure track instructor. The appointment is for three years with the possibility of renewal, beginning September 1, 2018. The interdisciplinary B.A. in Digital Technology and Cultures focuses on humanistic inquiry into digital culture and applied technology skills. Though the degree is offered in online and hybrid format for post-traditional students, the successful candidate must relocate to the Seattle area.

The Instructor of Digital Technology and Cultures will be responsible for developing course content in online and hybrid formats, teaching, faculty advising, and service.

The ideal candidate will have a teaching/research specialization in the theory and production of digital, new, and emerging media, with expertise in teaching digital cultural studies, new and social media production, digital storytelling, and history of text technologies.

Minimum Qualifications:  A doctoral degree and/or MFA and academic expertise in one or more of the following fields: Digital Humanities; Cultural Studies with a focus on technology; New Media; Digital Arts, or a related field. The candidate must be able to teach media production classes in digital imaging, data visualization, and 3D modelling using media production tools like Adobe Creative Suite, Tableau, and Unity.

Preferred Qualifications:  In addition, the candidate will possess a combination of these qualifications: experience creating courses and teaching in online and hybrid formats, and a demonstrated record of excellence as a teacher.
