Job description
Sussex Humanities Lab (SHL) in collaboration with the School of MFM wish to appoint to a fixed term, non-renewable, fellowship in Digital Humanities.

The Research Fellow is expected to contribute directly to the development of substantial new digital humanities projects undertaken by the SHL team, and to contribute in an advisory capacity to other SHL-supported projects. They will also be developing their own projects aligned to SHL interests.

The person appointed will have a specialism in developing and implementing digital humanities techniques, tools, approaches, and methods. They will understand the intersection of technical skills, humanities thinking, and methodological awareness that constitutes successful DH projects and be able to co-design and produce projects from inception to completion.

Key skills include the capacity to employ software engineering techniques appropriate to DH. This may include specific knowledge and capacity to use appropriate programming languages (e.g. python, java), to select and deploy appropriate methods fit for a research project, understanding of topic modelling, web scraping, GIS mapping, natural language processing.  

You should understand and be able to generate suitable work flow designs and documentation, and understand archival issues related to e.g. software. You need to have a demonstrable interest in the application of computer skills to humanities projects and humanities research outcomes.

The candidate will be appointed at post-doctoral level. They should have a specialism in Digital Humanities. They may hold an MA, MSc, or doctorate in in digital humanities. Or you may be a computer scientist, engineer, information science specialist.

Seattle University: Instructor, Digital Technology and Cultures


The School of New and Continuing Studies at Seattle University invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure track instructor. The appointment is for three years with the possibility of renewal, beginning September 1, 2018. The interdisciplinary B.A. in Digital Technology and Cultures focuses on humanistic inquiry into digital culture and applied technology skills. Though the degree is offered in online and hybrid format for post-traditional students, the successful candidate must relocate to the Seattle area.

The Instructor of Digital Technology and Cultures will be responsible for developing course content in online and hybrid formats, teaching, faculty advising, and service.

The ideal candidate will have a teaching/research specialization in the theory and production of digital, new, and emerging media, with expertise in teaching digital cultural studies, new and social media production, digital storytelling, and history of text technologies.

Minimum Qualifications:  A doctoral degree and/or MFA and academic expertise in one or more of the following fields: Digital Humanities; Cultural Studies with a focus on technology; New Media; Digital Arts, or a related field. The candidate must be able to teach media production classes in digital imaging, data visualization, and 3D modelling using media production tools like Adobe Creative Suite, Tableau, and Unity.

Preferred Qualifications:  In addition, the candidate will possess a combination of these qualifications: experience creating courses and teaching in online and hybrid formats, and a demonstrated record of excellence as a teacher.

Assistant Professor in Sculpture & Extended Media – University of Richmond


The Department of Art & Art History’s program in Visual & Media Arts Practice seeks applications for a tenure track assistant professor position in sculpture and extended media with a five-course teaching load, starting during the Fall 2018 semester. Candidates must be able to teach at all levels of traditional metalwork, woodwork, various casting methods, and contemporary computer-aided processes such as 3D printing, laser cutting, and CNC routing. Teaching and research must be rooted in sculpture, but may extend into other areas such as drawing, painting, printmaking, time-based media, or multimedia installation. The ideal candidate will have the aptitude for teaching at all levels of our curriculum, including advanced post-studio and non-media specific courses, as well as courses for the general education curriculum. They will be well versed in the history of sculpture, the impact of technology on human perception, the ways in which digital technologies have transformed more established modes of 3D media, and the breadth of contemporary art theory and practice.

The search committee is especially interested to hear from candidates who will bring to their research and teaching the diverse perspectives that come from non-traditional educational backgrounds or an understanding of the experience of those under-represented in higher education. Candidates may include in their cover letter information about how they will contribute to the building of a broadly diverse educational environment at UR. Dedication to teaching, creative work, and university service is crucial, as is the ability to support and sustain health and safety standards, develop innovative approaches to incorporating sculpture into our integrated curriculum, and oversee sculpture facilities in collaboration with our Studio Art Lab Manager. Assistant Professor in Cultural Theory and Digital Media – Virginia Tech

Virginia Tech invites applications for a tenure-track position in the ASPECT Ph.D. Program and the Dept. of Religion and Culture and at the rank of Assistant Professor in Cultural Theory and Digital Media. Appointment begins August 2018. Required areas of scholarly specialization include cultural theory, cultural representation in the public sphere, and digital media. Preferred specializations include a focus on historically underrepresented populations in the fields of visual studies, popular culture, or secularism/post-secularism. Regional and historical specialization is open, though successful candidates’ profiles will complement the interests of faculty in the Department of Religion and Culture and ASPECT.

The position will be a core faculty member in the interdisciplinary doctoral program ASPECT (Alliance for Social, Political, Ethical, and Cultural Thought). The qualified candidate must demonstrate an active research agenda, evidence of excellent teaching, interdisciplinary inclinations, and an ability to collaborate with colleagues in the department and the ASPECT Ph.D. program. The standard teaching load is 2 courses per semester, with at least one each year to be offered for the ASPECT PhD program. Other teaching responsibilities will include undergraduate courses in the Religion and Culture major, as well as courses contributing to the M.A. Program in Material Culture and Public Humanities (MCPH) (co-administered by the Department of Religion and Culture).

Required qualifications: Earned doctorate in a field of humanities or social scientific study focused on cultural theory (e.g. cultural studies, religious studies, history, anthropology, political theory, etc.) by the time of appointment. Demonstrated excellence in both research and teaching is required. Ability and desire to mentor/advise graduate students in interdisciplinary and theory-driven ASPECT doctoral program and the MA program in Material Culture and Public Humanities are essential, as is the ability to teach potentially high-enrolling courses in the Dept. of Religion and Culture. Lecturer – Textual Studies and Digital Humanities – Non-tenure Track


Loyola University Chicago (LUC), College of Arts and Sciences, Center for Textual Studies and Digital Humanities invite applications for a full-time, renewable, three-year Lecturer position in Textual Studies and Digital Humanities, beginning August 13, 2018 for academic year 2018-2019. The Center for Textual Studies and Digital Humanities is home to a variety of funded and internal Digital Humanities projects (See http://luc.edu/ctsdh/researchprojects/) and the MA program in Digital Humanities.

The candidate will be responsible for supporting ongoing research projects in the Center and for teaching courses related to that program, including required Digital Humanities and special topics seminars at the MA and advanced undergraduate level. Teaching will account for 50% of the position; the other 50% will be devoted to collaborating on ongoing interdisciplinary research projects supported by the Center. Candidates for the position must clearly demonstrate potential for excellence in teaching and research in the interdisciplinary area of Digital Humanities.

Qualifications
The successful candidate will have an advanced degree preferably in Computer Science or in English or another humanities discipline as well as a strong commitment to excellence in teaching at all levels.
