Digital Scholarship Strategist – Ball State University Libraries

The Digital Scholarship Strategist at Ball State University Libraries is vital member of the Digital Scholarship and Special Collections unit of University Libraries, providing innovative leadership to support digital scholarship and research on campus. The Strategist will play a crucial role in advancing the work of the Ball State University Digital Scholarship Lab (http://bsudsl.org/), launched in 2016 to support research at Ball State University by hosting education programming, providing grant support, and developing collaborative partnerships between scholars, librarians, and technologists to create original works of digital scholarship. FLSA Learned Professional Exemption Hrs/Week 40 Length of Assignment Fiscal Year – FT Continuing Contract Position Function Provide collaborative leadership to support digital scholarship on the campus of Ball State University, working with faculty in planning and developing innovative research and publishing using digital tools; provide project management and direction, recommend digital tools and platforms, and engage in campus outreach and instruction to support the creation of impactful, effective, and sustainable digital scholarship created by Digital Scholarship Lab fellows and University scholars.

Minimum Education MLS / MLIS / MIS degree from an ALA accredited program or a Master’s degree in a humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, or applied sciences field with relevant digital scholarship training and experience.

Minimum Experience More than one year of experience managing or developing digital scholarship/digital humanities research, utilizing digital tools in a research environment; knowledge of research methods and technical applications in a digital scholarship environment; strong technical, problem-solving, and communication skills required; demonstrated ability to collaborate with colleagues in an academic setting.

Digital Repository Librarian – Lafayette College Libraries

Lafayette College Libraries, winner of the 2014 American Library Association Excellence in Academic Libraries Award, is nationally recognized for its leadership modeling innovative approaches to digital scholarship in a liberal arts college setting.  The Department of Digital Scholarship Services (DSS) at Lafayette College Libraries seeks a curious, ambitious Digital Repository Librarian eager to grow professionally in the dynamic field of open-source digital repository implementation.  As a Samverapartner institution, Lafayette College Libraries is committed to the values of open-source software development for academic libraries and digital scholarship.  We are currently in the process of migrating our digital assets from an Islandora framework to a Samvera framework.  The faculty-status position of Digital Repository Librarian comes with excellent professional development support.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Digital Library Developer to implement a Samvera digital repository framework, explore the Hyku out-of-the-box digital repository solution, and migrate data to the new framework.
  • Monitor, maintain, and expand the digital repository in response to campus needs; oversee the ingest of digital assets.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in Digital Scholarship Services and College Archives & Special Collections to develop and apply metadata schema for digital curation and preservation tasks; help determine policies relevant to the repository.
  • Undertake systems administration responsibilities; liaise with the Digital Infrastructure unit of Information Technology Services regarding server and cloud storage strategies.

Qualifications

An ALA-accredited master’s degree in library or information science, or an advanced degree in a related field

Experience and/or a willingness to learn in the following areas:

  • digital repository administration
  • digital library metadata standards
  • copyright and intellectual property considerations for digital assets
  • open-source community software development projects

Digital Initiatives Librarian

Lafayette College Libraries, winner of the 2014 American Library Association Excellence in Academic Libraries Award, is nationally recognized for its leadership modeling innovative approaches to digital scholarship in a liberal arts college setting.  For the position of Digital Initiatives Librarian, the Department of Digital Scholarship Services (DSS) at Lafayette College Libraries seeks a talented, self-directed learner eager to hone skills and grow professionally in areas of digital scholarship and librarianship.  The ideal candidate will 1) work with faculty, students, and other collaborators to generate digital assets as the raw materials of digital scholarship, and 2) consult on computational methods to analyze digital content.  This faculty-status position comes with excellent professional development support.

Integrated Digital Media Faculty (non-tenure)

Assistant Professor of Convergent Media

College of Media, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

The College of Media invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in Convergent Media, including the interaction between the old and new media systems and platforms. Successful candidates should demonstrate an innovative research and teaching agenda. Appointments will be made on a tenure-track, 9-month academic year basis in one of the College’s three departments — Advertising, Journalism, or Media & Cinema Studies — beginning August 16, 2018.

Academic scholars and journalism practitioners are encouraged to apply. Scholars must have a Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree. Journalism practitioners must have a master’s degree or equivalent.  All candidates should possess the potential for high-quality research and teaching.  The word “research” is interpreted to include not only traditional research and scholarship, but also to encompass journalism creative works  and research that is inter-disciplinary and/or translational. Of particular interest are candidates open to mixed-methods research and willing to develop collaborations. Candidates with special interest in original research or creative works in one or more of the following areas will be given higher priority:

Successful candidates will be expected to develop a strong research/creative works program with the potential to attract outside funding and to work collaboratively with faculty within the College of Media and across the campus. Teaching duties will include multimedia/convergent media courses and development of conceptual courses and graduate seminars in a variety of areas related to convergent and emerging media and their impact on society. An ability to advance the College’s commitment to diversity through research, teaching, and outreach is desired.  

The College of Media’s faculty consists of internationally renowned social scientists, media professionals, and humanities scholars and serves 1,300 undergraduate and graduate students (http://media.illinois.edu/). The College is also home to the interdisciplinary Institute of Communications Research and Illinois Public Media (WILL-AM-FM-TV-Online), the public broadcasting service of the University of Illinois.

Digital Preservation & Curation Officer

Researcher in Residence Program for IMRC – Creative Technologists, Intermedia Artists and New Media Producers.

IMRC residencies support the creative research, production and presentation of initiatives in new media, intermedia, and other technology areas, and their social and cultural application. The residency supports a period of concentration and immersion in creative investigation, cutting-edge research or production of visionary, experimental applications and projects. Potential initiatives might range from live intermedia productions, sound and physical computing works to technical prototypes, installations and tactical media events. The RRP is committed to supporting a diverse and broad ranging creative environment. We consequently encourage applications from the broadest possible range of individuals and creative technologists to this program.

Residency Length

Residencies are offered twice a year, with one residency offered by invitation only and the other by application and juried review. There is one residency in the Fall and one in the Spring semester ranging on average from 4 to 8 weeks in length.

Award

RRP awardees are granted a $2,000 stipend, studio space, access to the IMRC Center’s state of the art digital design, media production, prototyping and fabrication studios, a materials budget of $1,000 and $1000 for IMRC fab lab machine time and tech support, and support for travel costs to and from Orono, Maine. Funding & support for housing during the residency will be provided up to $1500.

Eligibility

The ideal resident will both contribute to and benefit from the collective environment at the IMRC Center and the affiliated programs in New Media and Intermedia and will embrace the spirit of interdisciplinarity shared across the University of Maine. To promote collaboration and the sharing of diverse skill sets, these programs are grounded in and encourage interdisciplinary research in hybrid applications, innovative problem solving, and their utilization through the full range of research, development and commercialization. The aim of this program is threefold: to foster and support innovative research in Intermedia and New Media at the University of Maine; to build on the University of Maine’s reputation as a center of excellence; and to bring together students and faculty working at the IMRC Center with expert external participants to create a collaborative and innovative creative research environment. Collaborative teams are eligible to apply; the stipend will be split between the members.

Expectations

During the course of the residency RRP awardees are expected to participate in, and lead, public events including a lecture as part of the visiting artists series through a public presentation of past and current work. In addition to these type of events RRP awardees will be expected to lead a four to five week intensive course or in the case of shorter stays a workshop for graduates students and advanced undergraduates (in Intermedia and New Media) on some aspect of advanced research, development or production related to their own work, interests and skill sets.

There are a number of public events throughout the year that applicants are welcome to attend and can be found on the Intermedia MFA web site www.intermediamfa.org. The program’s term is varied but there are two yearly awardees one in the Spring and one in the Fall. Residents will be invited or selected from an open call, based on the quality of the work or research being proposed, the availability of the necessary tools and skills to support the work, and the relation of the proposed project to the overarching research agenda and activities of the IMRC Center and/or the University of Maine. The IMRC Researcher in Residence Program is made possible by support from the Intermedia MFA Program, IMRC Center, and the New Media Department.
