NAS Research Colloquium: “Return of the Living/Dead: Reading Indigenous Subjectivity in the Figure of the Zombie,” a lecture by Kali Simmons
Nov 3, 2015, 12:00 am – 1:30 pm
Many Nations Longhouse
The zombie has recently recaptured the attention of US culture. This paper will examine how anxieties surrounding the event of the zombie siege parallel settler-colonial anxieties regarding space and subjectivity. Through this lens, the figure of the zombie can be mobilized for indigenous critiques of US colonization and sovereignty.
Kali Simmons is a Master’s student in the University of Oregon English department, currently in the second year of the program. Drawing from the fields of psychoanalysis, native studies, and gender studies, her work examines popular films, particularly within the genres of science fiction and horror. Her research questions center on the intersections of popular culture, national identity, and gender/sexuality.
