Every spring, Cinema Studies brings a visiting filmmaker for a two-week residency on campus to work with our students, talk about their careers, and show their films. This year we are really excited to have with us Chloé Zhao, who is quickly becoming one of the most acclaimed directors working in independent film (See links below). Zhao who was born in Beijing but trained in the US has written and directed a pair of stunning cinematic portraits of people from the Lokata tribe in South Dakota; Songs My Brother Taught Me (premiered Sundance, 2015) and The Rider, for which she won the top prize at the 2017 Cannes Director’s Fortnight, and which will be released later this spring by Sony Pictures.

Chloé’s two features both lyrically take up in very compelling ways issues of ethnic and gender identity in the contemporary American West. For more information about her work, see the links and poster below:
