Questions of Possession in American Literature,” by English PhD candidate April Anson.

“Unfenceable Sovereignties” investigates the historical and enduring connections between settler colonial whiteness, literary genre, and the American environmental imagination. Anson shows how genre conventions emplot structures of racial and environmental exploitation in part through naturalizing settler colonial property relations, even in canonical environmental texts. To think otherwise, Anson’s project expands the archive of environmental justice literature to include nineteenth and twentieth century works that stretch our environmental imagination beyond worlds circumscribed by capitalism, settler colonialism, and the unequal consequences of climate change.
