Cody Gion will present a review of the literature on best practices for teaching Native students will be presented. The discussion will focus on the themes of increasing student engagement, managing student behavior, minimizing stereotype threat, and fostering cultural identity by creating a safe and welcoming classroom environment. Future directions for research and practice will also be discussed.

Cody is Northern Cheyenne originally from Southeastern Montana. Currently, Cody is pursuing a doctoral degree in Special Education at the University of Oregon. His research specializations include in equity in school discipline, implementation science, and teacher professional development. He has training in classroom positive behavioral support and culturally responsive instruction strategies to promote equitable outcomes for all students. Cody has applied experience in behavioral modification and instructional support as a consultant, school psychologist, youth skills coach, and substitute teacher.
