“Decolonizing Methodologies: Case Studies for Indigenous Pedagogy and Praxis” with Cornel Pewewardy (Kiowa-Comanche)

The Department of Education Studies is pleased to host Dr. Cornel Pewewardy next Tuesday, April 26th from 12:30 – 2:30pm at the Knight Library Browsing Room for a discussion on Decolonizing Methodologies (see abstract below).
This presentation will be followed by an interactive graduate student seminar that evening in Lokey 119 from 5:30 – 7:30pm (a light meal will be provided for the seminar).
Abstract: Using Pewewardy’s (2016) Transformational Indigenous Praxis, Dr. Pewewardy will share case studies to illustrate each stage of a tribal critical thinking development process. The case studies are based on a campus dialogue and action items led by the Critical Consciousness Study Group, which was created to promote cultural engagement, intercultural communication, and social equity at Portland State University.
BIO: Dr. Cornel Pewewardy (Comanche-Kiowa) is Professor and Director of the Indigenous Nations Studies Program at Portland State University. Professor Pewewardy engages in postcolonial Indigenous research paradigms by unfolding the impact of Native American mascots upon schools and the media. His research also explores culturally responsive teaching praxis, insurgent research, Indigenous urban and reservation-based teacher education, tribal college partnerships and ethnomusicology. Professor Pewewardy’s courses include Insurgent Research (Decolonizing Methodologies), Tribal Critical Race Theory, Indigenous Ways of Knowing, Red Power, and Culturally Responsive Teaching Indigenous Students.
