Introduction

My comic book The Last Rat On Earth explores a dystopian future where much of the world has been wiped out due to environmental degradation through a day in the life of the only remaining rat on the planet. My comic makes a statement about the environment and how if action is not taken soon, the planet may become uninhabitable. I hope that readers will gain a greater awareness of or curiosity about environmental issues after reading my comic. I learned a lot of helpful information in both ASIA 399 and ENG 280 that informed the design and storytelling of my comic. For instance, in ASIA 399 I learned about how kawaii (manipulative cute) characters and mascots are often very popular. This influenced the design of the rat in my comic, as I tried to make it cute in order for readers to further sympathize with it in the story and thus better receive the message of my comic.
