Introduction

My comic is about the wealth gap that exists within cities and how those wealth gaps affect the education that the children of the city. This comic was inspired by my personal experience as a student support specialist in a title 1 school in Oakland California. I hope that from reading my comic the general reader gains knowledge of the problem and understands the impact that it can have on future generations. The design choices I made were heavily inspired by the things we learned about in English 280. This includes everything from panel sizing to character orientation. The thing that I think impacted my design the most though from English 280 was the use of gutters and how breaking into the gutter gives comics a certain tone because that definitely impacted my final comic. Thinking about what we learned gave me a good base to build my comic. Asia 399 did not directly inspire the comic as much as English 280 did but learning about anime and manga in that class as well as character design helped me draw characters that were appealing and contained some of the kawaii features that we learned about in class.
