Introduction

My comic Down Under is about a person named Odell who turns into a mermaid and has their eyes opened to grave conditions of the sea. On their journey, Odell sees dying ecosystems, trash everywhere, and gets testimonies from marine animals on how ocean pollution effects their lives and wellbeing. I hope that readers will learn a little something about ocean pollution and just a few of the several ways it’s affecting the ocean. I want readers to feel inspired to help save our oceans and get involved in the activism surrounding ocean pollution. Learning about all the different technical and artistic aspects that go into comics via the ENG 280 class greatly helped when building my own story. For instance, Charles Hatfields tension code vs. code helped me to understand how words and images interact with each other on a page and how effective they can get messages across.
