From June 19 – August 28, I will be living and working with the Zoé Health Clinic in Tegucigalpa, Honduras through the Unite For Sight’s Global Impact Corps and Global Impact Lab. Although the program did not start until Summer, my involvement with the clinic began in January when I first applied for the program. Since then I have received IRB approval from the University of Oregon to investigate the co-morbidities of cataract, hypertension, and diabetes in adult patients. To collect my data, I will be asking a series of questions to understand their socioeconomic status and knowledge of these diseases. I plan on turning this data into an undergraduate thesis that may grow into future research projects.
This blog is serving as a platform for my friends, family, and academic advisors to stay up-to-date during my time abroad in Honduras. My posts will be thematic as I will try to do weekly updates. While there, I hope to:
- Improve my conversational and written Spanish
- Collect data on the patient prevalence and understanding of the co-morbidities between diabetes, cataracts, and hypertension.
- Contribute to the daily operations of the Zoé Health Clinic in a unique and meaningful way
