For your own good!
🙂
Attached is the Prepared Singing for Monday Week 6. If you are doing a video recording, make sure you record ALL 4 of them, if you do it in class, your GTF will pick one for you.
In singing assessment, make sure you always:
Here are some various harmonic progressions of varying lengths that make use of viiº as a substitute for V, “inappropriate” IV/iv, modulation to v (minor V), Neopolitans and everything else that you have learned last term up to last week.
The roman numerals are indicated in the file below. Also practice dictating the outer voices as that will be required as part of Friday’s midterm. #4 is a Harmonic/melodic dictation where the chord progression is arpeggiated. I would encourage you to listen to these near an instrument so you can check your work.
And just like the last post, this answer sheet has all the answers visible, so only look at it after you are completely finished. Unless you want to.
Harmonic Dictation practice for midterm
Speaking of mode mixture. This song has a lot of it:
Hello. Hi. Hey. Yo.
I’ve got a bunch of example that everyone can practice on. They are all short little 3 chord deals in familiar patterns. Some have V, some have viiº, some have V7 and some have viiº7 in different possible inversions. There are 12 examples below. See if you can get all of them. This will help you prepare for Friday’s written section of the midterm.
ETA: fixed the errors on the answer sheet. So if you got Nos. 3, 4 or 11 wrong, check now.

ANSWER KEY (all answers will be visible as they are all listed straight down one sheet, just fyi)
Some of you from my lab are asking for this, so now you have it: the beginning of Moment Musical by Franz Schubert, see how many peculiar chords can you heard! Score attached at the end of this post. Listen first before peeking at the score, please!
Compiled here is a list of 10 short excerpts, each with a tonicization or modulation to a closely related key. Check it out, challenge yourself and figure out the designated key, I will try to go over them as much as we can on Week 5 Wednesday!
(Not a mandatory assignment, just for fun!!)
Looking forward to some singing on Monday!

Hi.
We went over this a bit on Friday, describing the form of this movement from Beethoven’s Op. 26. It’s a ternary form. Please listen to the movement (it begins at 11:53 on this recording. It’s the 3rd movement if you are listening to your own recording) while you follow along in your score.
As you listen mark where you hear authentic cadences (either IAC or PAC) and make a note of what the two chords are. ie what key does he cadence in.
Please, for the love of all that is good, don’t do a full Roman Numeral Analysis. Just do as detailed a form diagram as you can, and then make note of what keys Beethoven moves through via the cadences. Don’t worry about how he gets there.
What I want you to get out of this is to listen for the form and how things are phrased, and of course how the overall tonal structure works in general. If you have any questions please e-mail me before Sunday night.
