Distant Modulations: A Guide

This week we started discussing modulations to distant keys (like the Neapolitan). On the Harmonic Dictation Page there is a new guide available that shows different ways of modulating to distant keys organized by interval. Check it out! Can you sing the “pivot” chords spelled in both the old key and the new key?

For added fun, here is an example of modulating up by half steps (no pivot, just direct modulations). How many times does the piece modulate up by half step? How is the final modulation different? Post your discussion with observations, questions, and insights in the comments below!

Notation Software Comparison

The subject of notation software recently came up due to the final transcription project. As a musician, you may be interested in owning a copy of one of the “big 2” notation programs. Below is a link to a recent blog post comparing Finale and Sibelius that you might find interesting.

Prepared Singing: Due Monday, April 28

Details for the prepared singing assignment are listed below and in the materials section of the website.

Prep Singing Week 5

1. Schubert: Der stürmische Morgen (song 18 from Winterreise), vocal line (complete song)

Winterreise is a song cycle comprising 24 songs. In song 1 (Gute Nacht), the protagonist hoped to marry a girl, but he must leave, in the middle of a winter night. He writes “Good Night” on her door to show her that he thought of her. As the cycle continues, he wanders on a winter journey and sings of lost love and snowy landscapes. By song 18 (Der stürmische Morgen), a storm picks up and the wanderer compares it to his own heart, wild and cold like the winter.

How the storm has torn asunder / The heavens’ grey cover! / The cloud tatters flutter / Around in weary strife. / And fiery red flames / Dart around among them; / That’s what I call a morning / That really fits my mood! / My heart sees in the heavens / Its own image painted – / It’s nothing but the winter, / Winter cold and wild! (Trans. Celia Sgroi)

Where does this song modulate? How does it modulate to and from the second key? What is the relationship between the keys? How does this song reflect the text?
