This piece shows us the industrial expansion in Korea during 1970s-1980s. The film crew set up their main shots in one room, but they changed the decoration time by time. In this way, audience can directly get what’s going on. Even though the culture is different compared with America, the visual objects help a lot.
When the factory boy and the factory girl bow to the audience at ninety degree angle, you know, you are in Korea (00:29)!The voiceover is Korean, so film crew put subtitle to help us understand. In my opinion, the close shots they got are more powerful than the language. For example 00:48, “women who worked as machines without any thought until they got married.” The close shot is a newspaper which covered by kids. It’s like a hint. When she said their place is like a chicken cage, there is a real chicken that locked in a cage. I’m guessing the film crew write a script first and then they go shot, because I can’t imagine how they catch up all these details and match with the voice over.
Nice color especially the clothing people wear in the film. Film crew use shot don’t tell. Audience can figure out what was happening by themselves. 00:57 the factory girl wears light blue uniform with white head scarf; 01:02 her clothes looks nicer, mild blue sweater with white pattern and she gets curly hair without glasses; 02:44 she stands up and dancing in the room, wear woolen coat and high heel!
