You might have seen some of the pictures shown in the video floating around social media. I, personally, always wondered how they were capable of taking these stills.
The video demonstrates what extreme explorers, legally called trespassers, go through and how they reach prohibited areas simply to take pictures.
I’ve watched this video three times now and every time I watch it I still feel like I’m there, standing in his shoes, walking on the edge of a high building and looking down 60 floors at the busy streets. I felt a part of this video and that is another great lesson, to me. I want to try and make the viewers a part of the video, whether it is emotionally, physically or mentally.
The beginning of the video is slow, but starting at 1:35 the background music starts and that’s when I assumed that things are about to take a different turn. Soon Vic, the photographer, started taking his viewers to an edgier location.
The photographer did a fine job in placing the viewer in his shoes by mainly using the POV, Point of View, technique. This style of shooting is specially great in this story because of its unusualness.
Not many people, after all, sneak into some of the highest buildings every other day. So, Vic strapping on a GoPro or simply pointing his camera in a way that would place the viewer in his position is special.
At 2:06 he added the sound effect of a camera snapping pictures, as he switched between his stills. At 2:42, the music starts becoming louder. It fits amazingly well with what he shows next, which is a simple tilt up to what is in front of him, the city from above.
The stills that comes after that, of his legs dangling from the rooftop and views of the city, are beautifully taken. I enjoyed listening to him as he shared his story, I enjoyed how he explains that he does this because he wants to share this with others, to make them feel a part of this journey, to make them feel as if they’re part of the pictures.
Also, I hope it reminds you that simplicity is just as beautiful as being edgy.
