Interstellar editor interview

This is an interview with editor Lee Smith conducted by an old friend of mine, Glenn Garland, who is himself a wonderful editor. I recommend watching the whole clip – it’s 25 minutes. It contains fascinating information about the technical and dramatic processes of editing the movie Interstellar. Click on the link and then scroll down a little to the Editors on Editing clip on the left. (There’s also an interview with the editor of Gone Girl next to the Interstellar clip.) Lee Smith also talks briefly at the beginning about how he got his start in cinema.

These interviews are mostly about dramatic feature films and so may seem to be from another world from digital multimedia. But the things they discuss that have to do with editing for pace, for drama, when to let scenes breathe – all of these things are common to really any kind of storytelling.

Some highlights were:

06:00 for a few minutes they talk about the technical aspects of editing film these days, in this case 70mm film.

07:00 – 8:30 Smith talks about how they shot the back-projection scenes and how they edited them. Technical but interesting for geeks.

08:55 They talk about using documentaries from the 1930s Dust Bowl era for the beginning interviews, also in the editing style of the beginning of the film to give the same sort of feel as those documentaries.

***09:55- 13:50 Probably the most pertinent section. A discussion of pacing in storytelling – I think this was the most perhaps relevant for our purposes section. Smith uses the term “pack it down” by which he means taking all the pauses out anywhere you can to up the pace. Includes his description of the scene where McConaughey watches his kid on screen. Very interesting.

***16:30 talking about editing transitions from one scene to the next. He talks about directors who shoot lots of heads and tails so the editor has the choice about when to start a shot and when to end it. So when you’re shooting, you are thinking about the editing process, what you are going to need, but you are shooting MORE. You’re not shooting from what you think will be the first frame used to the last frame used, you are shooting much more. It takes a lot more guts to justify doing that when you’re shooting film than digital video.

As Wes has pointed out, it’s important to remember, (and yet hard to do!) when creating nonfiction pieces, that they are all about emotion as much as dramatic films are. And that has to be in the images and be created or protected in the editing. As Mike Davis says in the video about standard multimedia interviews, “Just make me feel something for Christ’s sake.”
