“Solutions journalism is an important style for any kind of reporting, especially when covering the #MeToo movement. People often hear about the problem — but so what? It’s nice that people can be aware of the issue, but it’s more effective when they are offered a potential solution to help combat it. I’m hoping that my team’s reporting will help counter the established culture of toxic masculinity on college campuses, and more specifically, the University of Oregon. I also hope that our reporting will encourage and promote young men to actively seek mental health help.“
Zach Wilkinson served as a staff writer for two years on his award-winning high school newspaper, the Bruin Banner. During his senior year, he was promoted to sports editor. As sports editor, he was responsible for assigning stories and supervising page editors and he also contributed many hours outside of the school, overseeing production of the sports section and often covering school sporting events. His time on the Bruin Banner taught Wilkinson many journalistic lessons, including the importance of spelling, fact-checking, and meeting deadlines.
Wilkinson is currently a contributing photojournalist for many of the local news organizations, including KEZI, KVAL and The Register-Guard. He mainly covers high school football, as well as men’s and women’s basketball at the University of Oregon. As a part of his duties,Wilkinson is responsible for selecting and editing photos that are later used in a photo gallery on one of the news organization’s websites. He also covers spot news, such as the Indigenous People’s March on Jan. 18. Wilkinson will graduate from the University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication in the spring of 2019 with a Bachelor’s of Arts in Journalism and Advertising.
