“I believe that reporting on #MeToo with a solutions-oriented approach is the most productive way to make progress in educating the public about sexual harassment. I hope to have spread awareness on the prevalence of an often overlooked or mislabeled issue, particularly through the reporting I’ve done on sex trafficking. A crucial aspect of the #MeToo movement is calling out acts of violence and harassment for what they are as well as holding perpetrators accountable, and I hope my reporting has successfully upheld those values.“
Sydney Dauphinais is a feature writer and audio producer. She recently completed an editorial internship with the Portland-based magazine Portland Monthly, the flagship publication of the SagaCity Media group. There, Dauphinais gained experience in extensive fact-checking for several print issues and lifestyle writing for the online blog.
Now, with a catalyzing passion for language and culture, Dauphinais writes weekly book reviews for the Daily Emerald, the University of Oregon’s independent, student-run newspaper. She is also the Assistant News Director at KWVA, the campus radio station. She hosts a weekly political round-table talk show featuring local, state and national news. In the past, she’s worked as a news reporter for Duck TV News, where she gained working knowledge of HMC40s, FinalCut Pro and Adobe Premiere. She’s been able to translate this technical knowledge of audio and video to her day job at the Erb Memorial Union, where she is a member of the Event Support Staff. In her free time, when she is not reading fun memoirs or listening to feminist podcasts, she volunteers at SMART (Start Making A Reader Today), teaching children at the local elementary school how to read.
Dauphinais will graduate from UO in the Spring of 2020 with a Bachelor of Arts in both journalism and Spanish. She hopes to further her career with cross-border reporting and arts and culture style journalism.
