“#MeToo is not confined to a moment in time, but it is an ongoing issue that has stemmed from generations of oppression and negligence. Solutions journalism stories allow journalists to frame the issue of sexual harassment within the context of how we’ve created this inequitable social system, as well as engage audiences in their communities by reporting on effective responses to major problems facing society. I hope the work that comes from this course — and the work we continue to produce — makes readers a little less overwhelmed by our society’s systemic problems by giving them concrete responses that they can interact with and bolster in their community.”

Isabella Garcia has worked with the University of Oregon’s Robert D. Clark Honors College communications department for the past two years as a writer and web editor. She helped reinvent Scholar, a semiannual magazine covering the Honors College community, transforming it from a static text-based magazine to an engaging visual piece that hosts stories for both student and alumni audiences. As a writer, Garcia has covered college events, highlighted alumni work, and profiled students and faculty. As website editor, Garcia translates magazine spreads into functional web layouts, optimizes online content for search engine algorithms, and updates time sensitive content each term while maintaining a consistent visual style using HTML and CSS.

During her time in college, Garcia also interned with a marine biology lab, recording and producing content about the lab’s experience on a 10-day research excursion off the Oregon and California coasts. This experience with long-form journalism inspired Garcia to join FLUX, an award-winning SOJC magazine, where she wrote about mental health and issues surrounding community belonging, in addition to redesigning the magazine’s website.

Garcia will graduate from the University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication with a Bachelor of Science in Journalism and a minor in Computer Information Technology in June 2019.
