“Much of the news today, especially in the realm of the #MeToo movement, can come off as somewhat bleak. A stream of abusers that seems to be without end. It can be difficult to hear these stories over and over again, especially when nothing seems to be changing. Solutions journalism provides a counterpoint to that grimness, showing that there are people out there who are not just committed to making change but are actually enacting it. Solutions journalism reminds us that just because the wheels of justice or progress grind slowly, it doesn’t mean that they aren’t grinding at all.”
Christopher Bower was an editor on his award-winning high school newspaper for three years, where he learned the nuances of journalistic style, the basic rules of editing and how to manage a team of like-minded individuals. His time as an editor also granted him various technical skills, including familiarity with Adobe InDesign and WordPress, the latter of which Bower employed during his time as Online Editor in Chief, designing and updating the paper’s online presence.
Bower continued to explore the journalistic medium during his time at the University of Oregon, experimenting with different mediums (such as audio), reporting techniques (searching and employing public records) and diving deeper into the world of copyediting and design.
Bower will graduate from the University’s School of Journalism and Communication and the Robert D. Clark Honors College in the spring of 2019 with a Bachelor of Science in journalism and a minor in Latin.
