Lexicon #4 (week 5)

  1. Distributed Cognition & Collaborative Intelligence- these terms refer to the ways in which knowledge extends beyond a single individual. This includes information embedded in social groups, and our ability to think with others.
  2. Informal Learning- informal learning is when you learn in an uplanned, unstructured manner. This can include observing others, as well as your own trial and error.
  3. White Space- white space is the empty space between shapes and images within your design (similar to negative space). It is an important tool in design, as it can lend to balance, and help draw the eye to important areas of the image.
  4. Focal Point- in art and design, the focal point is the area that grabs your attention the most. It is where your eyes are naturally drawn to first, and therefore, it is important to create a focal point intentionally within your design.
  5. Layers- in Adobe Illustrator, layers are a useful tool for creating visual pieces which can be manipulated independent of the rest of the image. It can also be utilized to add depth, texture, and detail to an image.
