Media literacy ad/pr analysis

When I traveled to London for the weekend, we stayed at a hostel entirely meant for younger groups of people. The lobby had mirrors and LED light up signs and cool plants. One of the mirros had a sticker that said “you look fabulous, darling” a super cute sticker that is intended to have you take a photo in the mirror. Underneath the sticker, there is a sticker that is the instagram handle of the hostel in pink letters.

Art museum gift shop

Visiting the Musée de l’Orangerie was a very special and unique experience for me. I thought it was a super simple and calm museum which made the whole experience even better. It really allowed the waterlilies to have their own moment. I thought they were so beautiful and special, which is why I believe they should be honored in the right way. After going through the museum, we headed into the gift shop to see what they did for the waterlilies. I had two experiences in the gift shop. First, I was able to admire an artwork book by Pierre Georgel that was filled with pages of just the waterlily paintings. I thought this was a beautiful way to honor the artwork. It was ethical and beautifully done and did not take away from the art. On the other hand, I encountered many trinkets that did not do the waterlilies justice. This pair of socks that I saw made the waterlilies look cheap and you could not even admire the art. It took away from the real beauty that these paintings have. I did not feel the socks and little trinkets were ethical because they cheapen the art.IMG_8665 IMG_8671

Disney cross promotion / branding

Disney is one of the main talents at cross promotion. Most, if not all, of their rides and attractions are based off of movies. They create whole parks that promote and showcase characters and elements from a movie. You can buy shirts, keychains, hats, and even ears that are all based off of that one movie. Disneyland used to have a ride called Space Mountain. It was just space themed without a real movie attachment. Now, the ride has been transformed into “Star Wars Hyperspace Mountain”. This ride now promotes Star Wars and attracts Star Wars fans. This is a really good way to gain more fans for a certain attraction because it brings in a new fan base that may not love rollercoasters but loves Star Wars. I think it is ethical because it ultimately doesn’t harm anyone but I do not love how they are changing very original rides.

Normandy Excursion

Normandy was definitely a very confusing emotional experience for me. I was excited and interested to see Normandy, but at the same time, I felt uneasy being excited to see a place where such a tragedy had occurred. The experience was super interesting though. Being able to go inside the bunkers and see what it was like to be underground in that exact location was crazy. I learned about the deep holes in the ground and how they are from bombs, and that was the coolest thing to see. We learned about the tapestry as well which I did not know about before. I will take forward the memories of the location and how the crosses were done with such detail and care. The location and execution of the memorial was done so well and truly makes for an amazing peaceful spot to honor so many lives. I will remember this whole experience forever. It was such a memorable day and I am really glad we got to see Normandy.

Orsay and Louvre Reflection

I really enjoyed my experience at both of these museums and all of the artwork inside of them. At the Orsay, my favorite painting was the one of the two girls playing the piano. I really loves the colors and innocence of this painting, it really stood out to me and I even got a postcard of the painting. I thought the Orsay was absolutely beautiful and the views from the building were stunning as well. The big clock in the window was a piece of art on its own. The artwork was simply and beautifully displayed and it was amazing to see how the simplicity could elevate the art. The Louvre was one of my favorite museums that we visited. I thought it was absolutely iconic. I really appreciate watching the Beyonce video beforehand as well because it brought a sense of modern connection to the viewing process which I really enjoyed. I thought seeing the Mona Lisa was a really cool experience. It can be hard with all the lines and cell phones to feel a very calm and independent experience but that is part of our world. I overall felt really connected to the art and the artists and I loved every minute of both museums.

Picasso Museum Reflection

I thought the Picasso Museum was super unique and unlike anything I had ever seen. I really enjoyed the environment of the museum as well. It was very mellow and calm within the walls of the museums and we were really given the opportunity to admire the art in a good setting. Picasso had a very specific style of artwork that was very consistent throughout his work which was super interesting to see. I feel like I learned about Picasso throughout admiring his sketch books that translated into his work of art. I loved when his paintings were full of color because this made it feel as though they were coming to life. One of my favorite parts of the museum was the video portion that showed clips from Picasso’s life. This was super unique and engaging and I really enjoyed it. I was really pleasantly surprised by all of the artwork that filled the walls, I really loved the museum.

The Image: A Guide to Pseudo-Event

The book, The Image: A Guide to Pseudo-Events in America, by Daniel J. Boorstien describes what can be called pseudo events. Pseudo events refers to fake or fabricated events that are told or experienced in a public light or broadcasted to a large audience. Pseudo events are typically planned and well thought out, they are not natural or an accurate representation of real life. Boorstien argues that Americans are living in a false reality and they do not know what “real” news or media is. In addition, he alludes to the fact that Americans might be more focused on pseudo events than their actual reality. Boorstien discusses Americans and their desire to travel abroad. He explains that the travel experience has been completely transformed. By this, he means that travelers fill their so-called experience with pseudo events. People become more focused on how their experience should be, rather than how their experience truly is. This portion of the book specifically stood out to me because I feel as though this really applies to me and my experience with studying and traveling abroad. In regards to the media side of learning in Paris, I think reading and engaging in everything is crucial. This is how you grow and learn in new places. Though being critical and not immediately believing everything you read is the key to avoiding false media. In regards to the personal side of studying abroad, it is common to believe that your trip should look or be a certain way. This takes away the authenticity of the experience. It is really important to me that I have an experience that fulfills me, not an experience that is appealing to others.
