On diversity, equity, and inclusion, and the department climate

A statement on behalf of the Climate Committee

One of our goals as a department of mathematics is to create an inclusive and supportive environment for all of our students, faculty, and staff. We aspire to be a department in which all people are treated with dignity and respect. We welcome individuals of all abilities/disabilities, ages, ethnicities, gender identities, races, sexual orientations, and socio-economic circumstances. Different perspectives strengthen our mathematical community. We also acknowledge that individuals who are traditionally underrepresented or underserved in mathematics may face additional barriers; one of our goals is to have a department whose makeup reflects that of society.

As with our own research, our work to create a diverse and inclusive climate is never done. We stand by the University of Oregon’s diversity statement. Since actions often speak louder than words, we also maintain a list which highlights some of the diversity-focused programs and initiatives led by our department and its members.

Here are some webpages and documents maintained by the Climate Committee.

If you experience an issue related to a negative work or learning environment in the department, who can you talk to? Even without a concrete issue, if you need additional support, where do you go? Please visit our resources page.

Please visit our initiatives page to learn about what the department and its members are doing to foster a community of respect, and remove barriers to participation in mathematics.

Here is the shared values statement drawn up by the Climate Committee and then ratified by the department in 2021.
