Reflection on Learning Goals

1). To increase my understanding of different marketing strategies and be ableĀ  to recognize when and why to implement certain methods.

My knowledge of marketing strategies was very limited going into this class, and I feel I have a more comprehensive understanding of different strategies. Through my own research and class presentations, I learned that there is a lot of overlap in approaches, and I have a better understanding of when and why certain methods would be most appropriate. I want to continue to build on this knowledge, especially as it relates to marketing for non-profit arts organizations. I would also be interested in learning more about marketing in the for profit sector.

Learn how to develop a formal marketing plan that fits the needs of an arts organization.

Creating a marketing plan for OLSP with my group was challenging and a great learning opportunity. It was helpful to meet with the OLSP staff throughout the term to get feedback, and it is rewarding to know that our project will hopefully benefit the organization.

Increase my marketing vocabulary and learn how to assess the effectiveness of a marketing strategy.

My marketing vocabulary has increased, and I learned about different evaluation methods, especially during my research for the OLSP marketing plan. I didn’t realize that there were so many different strategies, and I am interested in learning more about them in-depth.

Learn some strategies that can be applied to social media marketing.

I learned a lot about social media marketing, especially from Seth’s presentation. This class taught me that having a social media presence for an arts organization is pretty crucial. Through our group project, I saw the connection between social media marketing and emotional and content marketing. I didn’t understand Facebook analytics before this class and now I have much better understanding of how to identify a target audience and track the effectiveness of a campaign.

Be able to research and understand a particular audience and how to interpret and use that information.

Researching and understanding a particular audience is very important because it is much easier to market something to a target audience rather than market to everyone. While identifying targeted audiences can lead to generalizations and stereotyping, it is helpful in understanding who is interested in your product or service in order to market more effectively. Trying to market to everyone is a waste of time and money.
