Activities & Events for Mentees
MAP IT OUT intends to provide valuable resources and meaningful mentorship connections for high school students from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds who are interested in a career in healthcare/STEM Research.
What kinds of activities and events will be available for mentees?
Guest Speakers
MAP IT OUT will be organizing major events featuring researchers and/or physicians to give advice and to talk about their background, experiences, and journey to the career they are working in today.
Mentors
Each mentee will be partnered with one or two mentors. MAP IT OUT Mentors are current college students who are involved in STEM and are ready to help out- whether it is advice, college application aid, or anything college-related! Our mentors are individuals who have already been in your shoes, so ask them anything!
Virtual Lab Tours
Mentees will be virtually given tours of Institute of Neuroscience research labs, Molecular Biology labs, and many others located on the University of Oregon campus!
Zebrafish Facility
Provides zebrafish required for pioneering research at the UO involving explorations of the gut microbiome, in which vast numbers of microbes contribute to both health and disease in their hosts.
Histology Facility
The Histology Facility in the Institute of Neuroscience specializes in techniques that permit the visualization of tissue components at the resolution of the light microscope.
Institute of Neuroscience
The Institute of Neuroscience (ION) is a group of biologists, psychologists, mathematicians, and human physiologists at the University of Oregon that has pooled its expertise to tackle fundamental questions in neuroscience. Mentees will be given virtual tours of a few labs/facilities a part of ION.
College Scholarship Eligibility
At least $2000 worth of merit and financial-based scholarships will be available to a selected number of mentees who successfully complete our program and demonstrate growth/initiative.
Additional details will be sent out later on!
Undergraduate Research Symposium
The Undergraduate Research Symposium is a yearly event where undergraduate students from all majors share their research and work.
The next Undergraduate Research Symposium will be held @ 10 AM on May 27th, 2021 via a livestream on YouTube! All Mentees will be able to access this livestream. The work of undergraduates who sign up to present during the symposium is truly inspirational and creative; it will be interesting to see what they have been working on this year!
