With these photos, I wanted to capture the swimmer’s emotions. The sport of swimming is full of happiness, determination, strength, and sometimes even anger and disappointment. Swimming pushes you to be your best, and for that reason, I will always love the sport. Swimming has been and always will be a huge part of my life.
The University of Oregon Swim Club practices at Downtown Aquatics in the Rec Center from 7:00-8:30 Monday through Thursday. The team enjoys a hot tub, recreation pool, and lap pool.
Amelia Steffe, a current sophomore, has been on the U of O Swim Club for a year. She swam the 200-yard backstroke at a national swim meet last year and hopes to qualify again this year in the 50-yard backstroke and 100-yard individual medley.
Steffe has been swimming since she was eight years old. Although the butterfly is her least favorite stroke, she still practices it to improve her form.
Goggles and a swim cap are essential accessories for competitive swimmers. The goggles cover the eyes, and the swim cap protects her hair from chlorine damage.
A good dive can make or break a swimming race. Steffe performs a unique racing start that propels her off the block. This technique adds some extra speed to help her go faster.
