Celebrating 20 years of Dance Africa

This year the school is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Dance Africa program, a Department of Dance repertory company. To mark this milestone, Dance Africa founder and director Rita Honka has planned a series of events during fall and winter.

Through the years, the program has brought internationally known artists from Africa to enrich the community of Eugene and the University campus. On October 21, we were honored to welcome drummer Jacob Mafuleni and dancer Martha Thom, members of the traditional Zimbabwean performing ensemble Mbira dzeMuninga, for workshops in drumming and dance.

Dance Africa celebrates the rich traditions of African dance, music, and culture in and around the area of Eugene, and represents the voices of a variety of African ethnic groups. More information about the program is available at http://danceafrica.uoregon.edu. The annual Dance Africa concert is scheduled on Jan 24-26, 2013 in the Dougherty Dance Theatre, Gerlinger Annex.
