Parliament Square, in the heart of Nassau, Bahamas, was quiet for a city center on the morning of October 15th, as a service was held for former MP (Member of Parliament) Obediah Wilchcombe, after his death on the 25th of September.
Wilchcombe dedicated his life to the truth, working as a journalist and broadcaster for over 20 years, before his then 29 years of political service. During his political career Wilchcombe served as a senator, the minister of tourism, and as a member of parliament. Committing himself to telling the whole story, and making sure that everyone’s story was heard.
Remembered as a “remarkable civil servant,” and “exceptional orator,” by even his opposition, Wilchcombe found his greatest purpose in serving the Bahamian people directly as their minister of social services, where he worked simply for the people. While many a politician will claim to be the voice of the people, Wilchcombe was considered by all to truly be one dedicated to helping citizens find their own voices in society. Not only willing to help the masses, but to teach them, and give them the tools required to be able to better help themselves.
While his death was a sad reality for Bahamian people, Wilchcombe achieved what few ever will, becoming immortalised in the country, and its people, that he worked so hard to build.
