For years the United States has placed harsh embargos on Cuba. leading to very little foreign investment in Cuba and international trade with Cuba, leading to an extremely crippled and fragile economy. International pleas for the United States to loosen or end these embargos have fallen on deaf ears. Despite the fact that Cuba is currently in the midst of one of the worst economic crises in their history, with mass shortages of food, fuel and medicine, the United States refuses to stand down.

Cuba is also barred from exporting to the United States, one of their closest neighbors, and despite their products being in demand the United States government is hard set on keeping the embargoes in place. This has cost Cuba nearly 5 million dollars in 2022 alone. Sending a suffering country deeper into poverty.

The U.N. has been continuously calling for the United States to end these embargos that lead to the suffering of millions of cubans. For the 31st time the U.N. General Assembly called for the US to stop. In the vote 187 countries approved the non-binding resolution with only the United States and Israel voting against it, while Ukraine abstained.

The Cuban foreign minister gave a speech in front of the assembly pleading that the “blockade prevents Cuba from accessing food, medicines, and technological and medical equipment.” all of which are in great demand for the struggling Cuban citizens. The Cuban foreign minister went on in his speech to say the embargo “qualifies as a crime of genocide”, saying that the embargos are aimed at forcing the cuban people to rise up against their communist government out of pure desperation.
