Guatemala had a civil war from the years of 1960 to 1996 which devastated the country in a handful of ways. There was conflict between the government of Guatemala and the Unidad Revolucionaria Nacional Guatemalteca which was a revolutionary party. The nation experienced genocide during these years and one period of time stood out the most, there was a three year campaign by US-backed Guatemalan military in which 150,000 villagers were killed most of which were Maya. This campaign was said to root out ethnic group that was suspected of supporting the antigovernment rebels. After the war ended the nation was still left with many displaced or driven to seek refuge in nearby countries. For example, around 150,000 people left to find safety within Mexico.
Years after the ended some of the military officers and soldiers that committed these crimes and killed so many people were prosecuted for their actions. In 2011, four soldiers were sentenced to 30 years for each murder plus and additional 30 from crimes against humanity, which totaled to 6,060 years for each of them. Guatemala is against genocide and especially the citizens are since they experienced it internally. This genocide has also impacted their human rights laws and views to this day.
