LGBTSTEM Day 2019

Join the University of Oregon in celebrating the 2nd #LGBTSTEMDay –

The International Day of LGBTQ+ People in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths:

July 5, 2019, Willamette Hall Atrium

What?

The LGBTSTEM Day was first celebrated on July 5, 2018, across the world, and for the 2019 edition we invite you to join the University of Oregon in those celebrations. Our program for the day is:

  • 9.00–9.30 AM: Optional check-in (Willamette Hall atrium)
  • 9.30-11.30 AM: Allyship workshop with the Queer Ally Coalition (Willamette Hall atrium). The number of participants for the workshop is capped to 40 persons for practical reasons, so please show up on time to be sure to secure your spot! Coffee and muffins will be served during the workshop.
  • 1.00–2.00 PM: A talk by Jeremy Yoder (Assistant Professor at CSU Northridge): Challenges for LGBT+ STEM researchers, and how we can remove them. (Willamette Hall atrium)
  • 2.00–3.00 PM: Refreshments and poster session featuring research by University of Oregon LGBTQ+ researchers in STEM (Willamette Hall atrium)
  • 3.00 PM: A raffle with prizes donated by local organizations.

When?

Friday July 5, 2019, 9 AM–3 PM! See the program above.

Why?

LGBTQ+ people in science, technology, engineering, and maths (STEM) continue to struggle to openly be themselves (see: 2013 Queer in STEM survey, 2014 Factors Impacting The Academic Climate2015 American Physical Society survey, 2018 Coming out in STEM: Factors affecting retention of sexual minority STEM students). We believe that a day of recognition goes a long way in helping raise awareness and increase support.  It is an important component of the global push to increase diversity and inclusion in STEM.

Join our poster session!

We want to showcase the diversity of science that diverse UO researchers produce. Therefore, we ask you to join us for a STEM-wide poster session with refreshments. The audience will be broad, so using an existing poster works perfectly; we are here to showcase your research! If you need to print a new poster, we have some funds to support that (see contact details below). Sign up here now!

Volunteer!

Do you want to help organize this event, or volunteer during the LGBTSTEM Day? Sign up here.

Support

We can celebrate the LGBTSTEM Day because the UO LGBT+ in STEM has received support from the Department of Biology (through a Diversity Equity and Inclusion grant), and the Data Science Initiative!

Contact

Martin Stervander and Tzula Propp are the main coordinators. Contact them if you are interested in volunteering, participating, or if you have any questions.
