Socially-Distanced Ally-Inclusive Social Hour Fri, Oct. 2nd

Pick up some food nearby and join LGBT+ in STEM for a socially-distanced social hour Friday, October 2nd, 5:30-7pm at Washburne Park! Our social events are a great way to meet other queer-identifying graduate students, post-docs, faculty, and staff at UO. Allies are also welcome at this first event of the new academic year.

Please make sure to bring your face covering and to adhere to social distancing guidelines. We will be able to spread out on the grass at Washburne Park. If the weather should change, requiring this event to either be postponed or canceled, we will email our mailing list and the STEM departments at UO.

The following takeout options are located at 19th & Agate and will be open during the social hour timeframe:
Prince Puckler’s Ice Cream
Sweet Life Petite bakery
Oolong Bar (closes at 6pm)
Hey Neighbor Pizza House
Beppe & Gianni’s Trattoria
Every Day Kine Grindz from Hawaii food truck (opens at 6pm)
McMenamins East 19th Street Cafe
Agate Alley Bistro

Pride Flag Decal Fundraiser for NAACP Eugene ACT-SO Fund

LGBT+ in STEM is raising funds to donate to the NAACP Eugene Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics (ACT-SO) Fund through the sale of reusable vinyl pride flag window decals. Decals will be sold for $5 each, though you will have the option to add an additional donation if you choose. We have ~45 decals and will continue the fundraiser until we run out. To ensure that we don’t oversell our supply, we ask everyone to first fill out the linked form to provide their name, mailing address, and number of decals they wish to purchase. We will then follow up via email with a link to a Venmo account for the donation. In the interest of transparency and accountability, we will publicly post confirmation of the final donation to the NAACP Eugene ACT-SO Fund.

More about the NAACP Eugene ACT-SO Fund:
ACT-SO is an acronym for Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics. ACT-SO is a major youth initiative of the NAACP. ACT-SO provides a forum through which youth of African descent demonstrate academic, artistic and scientific prowess and expertise, thereby gaining the same recognition often only reserved for entertainers and athletes. The program pairs students with mentors in their field of interest who help them on a summer project that they then present in a regional competition. You can read more about it here: https://naacplanecounty.org/programs/act-so-new/.

March Social Hour & LGBT+ in STEM T-Shirt Survey

We have some funding to help offset costs of ordering t-shirts with the UO LGBT+ in STEM logo on it. In order to get the most accurate price quote, we need to assess interest level. We will send out an official order form later in March. Please fill out our survey ASAP (and preferably by March 4th) if you’d be interested in ordering a t-shirt with our logo on it: http://bit.ly/LGBTinSTEMShirt

And as a reminder, please join us for an informal social hour Wednesday, March 4th 6-8pm in the back room of Falling Sky on campus in the EMU. This is an ally-inclusive event, so all graduate students, post-docs, faculty, and staff are welcome!

LGBT+ in STEM T-Shirts and Leadership Team Members

LGBT+ in STEM has acquired some funding to order t-shirts that will be available to everyone at a reduced cost. We will be sending out a survey soon to our membership list to gauge interest in shirts so that we can get the most accurate price quote. A form to collect official t-shirt orders will be sent after that. To make sure you get this survey and order form, sign up for our mailing list here.

We are also looking to add new members to our leadership team, as several of our current members will be defending their PhDs and graduating in the next few months (congrats!). If you are interested in joining our leadership team or would like to suggest someone, please email us at uo.lgbtinstem@gmail.com.

March Social Event

Thanks to everyone who has attended our last few social events held at Spectrum (November 20th and January 29th).

Our next social hour will be on Wednesday, March 4th 6-8pm at Falling Sky in the EMU on campus, where we’ve reserved the back room. This is an ally-inclusive, so bring your friends! All grad students, post-docs, faculty, and staff are welcome. Falling Sky offers a discount on Wednesdays for graduate students ($3 off any beer and food combo).

Announcing 2019-2020 Leadership Team

With the conclusion of the 2018-2019 school year comes the transition to a new leadership board. This board marks a new era for LGBT+ in STEM, as all founding members of the organization will have transitioned out of their leadership roles. We would like to thank Lisa, Kenyon, and Kiana for their time on the leadership board and recognize Abby and Tzula for their commitment to the board this year and next. We also want to welcome Alexis Kiessling (chemistry) and Amber Rolland (biochemistry) to the leadership team for next school year. Please help us welcome this new group of leaders. We hope next year we will continue to see growth in visibility and support for all graduate students, faculty, and staff in the sciences.
