Raza Unida Youth Conference Needs Presenters

Hello, all.

My name is Yomaira Tarula and I am the 2017-2018 Raza Undida Youth Conference (RUYC) coordinator along with Veronica Fernandez.

RUYC is an annual all-day event where we invite Latinx high school students from Lane County and other parts of the state to come to the UO campus and participate in a conference with keynote speakers, workshops, and a campus tour. It is an opportunity for local Latinx youth to gain information on how to access higher education, while also educating on various topics that affect our communities. One of our primary goals with RUYC is to empower youth and give them the necessary tools to access higher education while also giving them an introduction to important issues that are constantly affecting Latinx and other marginalized communities.

The motto of Raza Unida Youth Conference is Educación: El Derecho De La Raza! (Education: The Right of the People!). Based on the unfortunate events and political climate that has impacted our Latinx community this past year, the 2018 RUYC theme will be Floreciendo juntos (Flourishing Together). This is a reminder that no matter what struggles we face, as people of color, we will thrive. The conference is Friday the 2nd of February at the EMU Ballroom.

With this in mind we are asking and inviting community members, alumni, university students and faculty to present workshops during the RUYC. We are looking for workshops that discuss topics such as culture, indigenous roots, identity, education, gender, sexuality, and immigration. We hope that both the students and you, the presenter, will gain a stronger sense of community knowledge and will feel invested in the students’ lives and future education.

UO MEChA cannot do this on our own and we need people to help make this event a success. If you choose to participate as a workshop presenter, please let us know as soon as possible!

Multiple workshops are also welcomed and encouraged as we will have two sessions of workshops:
*First session from 10am-11am
*Second session from 1pm-2pm
Presenters are invited to stay for the duration of the conference and are welcomed to lunch.

I have attached a link below where you can fill out important information in preparation for the conference. The deadline we are asking for is January 12th. If there is any questions I an answer please feel free to email me at yjt@uoregon.edu or the RUYC email at: raza.unida.youth.conference@gmail.com
