Sergio Alonso Mendez—born on June 22nd 1998 in Lima, Peru—currently attends Portland Community College to become a Spanish language instructor and educator. At five years old, he moved to the U.S. with his mother to Pennsylvania, to meet his sister who had already established residency. Soon after, he moved with his family  first to Puerto Rico when he was six years old. Then, he and his family moved to Oregon where Mendez enrolled in elementary school. Spending his early childhood in Lima, located along the coast of Peru, Spanish is Mendez’s first language. While he has lived predominantly in the US mainland since the age of six, his time living in Puerto Rico reinforced his Spanish speaking skills. Yet, it was in Oregon that Sergio honed his English-speaking skills, and also where we met in middle school.  Outside of academics Mendez is a talented musician, avid skateboarder, and fierce friend to those who know him.

This tape covers three recorded conversations held in the beginning of 2020. Within these, Mendez speaks of being a migrant and bilingual student, his journey to the U.S., struggles encountered within the Oregon public school system, and his ultimate decision to step into the role of an educator. His story is that of encountering adversity, a consistent determination, and resilient care. Through his role as an educator, Mendez looks to give back to those in the community, introduce aspects of the Latino community via the Spanish language, and foster a balance between needed personal growth and empathy building.

Sergio Alonso Méndez, nació el 22 de junio de 1998, en Lima, Perú. Actualmente estudia en Portland Community College para ser profesor de español.  Apartir de los cinco años, se mudo a los EE UU con su madre a Pennsylvania, para vivir con su hermana; ella ya se había estabilizado su residencia. Luego, se mudaron con su familia primero a Puerto Rico cuando Mendez tenía seis años. Después de tres años, la familia de Mendez se mudo a Oregón donde el comenzó sus estudios de primaria. Mendez pasó su primera infancia en Lima, ubicada en la costa de Perú, y el español es su primer idioma. Su familia se mudó a Puerto Rico un poco después que el tenía seis años. Luego su familia se mudó a Oregón donde él cursó la escuela primaria. Si bien Mendez ha vivido predominantemente en los EE. UU. desde los seis años, su tiempo en Puerto Rico reforzó su habilidad de hablar español. Fue en Oregón donde Sergio perfeccionó el inglés, y también donde nos conocimos en la escuela secundaria. Fuera de lo académico, Méndez es un músico talentoso, un ávido residente de skate y un fuerte amigo de quienes lo conocen.

Esta grabación cubre tres conversaciones con él de principios de 2020. Dentro de ellas, Méndez habla de ser un estudiante migrante y bilingüe, su viaje a los Estados Unidos, las luchas que tuvo dentro del sistema de escuelas públicas de Oregón y su decisión final de asumir el papel de educador. Su historia es la de enfrentar adversidad, determinación constante y una atención flexible. A través de su papel como educador, Méndez busca retribuir a los miembros de la comunidad, presentar aspectos de la comunidad latina a través del idioma español y fomentar un equilibrio entre el crecimiento personal y la construcción de la empatía.
