Latino Roots is a collaborative research project headed by University of Oregon professors Dr. Lynn Stephen and Dr. Gabriela Martinez. The class begins winter term and dives into the racialized histories of Oregon. In particular, it employs an ethnographic approach to examine the ways in which Oregon came to be under the systems of settler colonialism and white supremacy. In shifting gears, the class gives undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to document the lives of Latinx origin peoples living in Oregon. In past Latino Roots sequences, students produced their own short documentary films centered around their Latinx participants. However, with the advent of the coronavirus outbreak, the Latino Roots 2020 course has had to rethink the way in which a life story is told. Through purely digital communication and a lot of hard work, the Latino Roots 2020 class has innovated previous methods, thus giving students newer ways to produce work that tells a Latinx story.

“Latino Roots” es un proyecto de investigación colaborativo liderado por las profesoras del Universidad de Oregon Dr. Lynn Stephen y Dr. Gabriela Martinez. El clase comienza en la trimestre de invierno y estudia raza e historia en Oregon. El clase usa un enfoque etnográfico para analizar cómo Oregon llegar esto baja de los sistemas de colonización de colonos y supremacía blanca. Entonces, el clase cambiar el enfoque y da a los estudiantes de pregrado y posgrado la oportunidad de documentar las vidas de los personas de origen Latinx. En los clases pasadas, estudiantes producen sus propios cortometrajes documentales. Sin embargo, con el brote de coronavirus, el clase ha tenido que repensar la forma en que se cuenta una historia de vida. Solo a través de la comunicación digital y mucho trabajo duro, Latino Roots 2020 ha innovado métodos anteriores, dando a los estudiantes nuevas formas de contar historias de vida.
