For project one I really wanted to challenge myself and think outside of the box in terms of structure of my design. I decided that I wanted to a non narrative piece and that I would like to use a scanner. First I made some sketches involving a string that would travel through every panel, every panel having a different background. So I did a test piece to see how difficult it would be to line up the string in every panel. I also wanted to see how different materials and colors looked scanned. Once finished that I had a pretty good idea on how I wanted to execute the final piece. I made another sketch (the green pen sketch) and decided to do paper cuts, which is something I am extremely interested in right now. The result came pretty organically, picking colors, textures, and shapes that would contrast and create interesting patterns.
This project was very experimental for me. I haven’t scanned my paper cuts to that extent before. I really enjoy layering hand made work with photograph and hope that I can incorporate paper cuts and photographs later in this term.
