Q&A by Sydney Kiest

Hometown: Durban, South Africa

Micheal is currently a sophomore at the University of Oregon and has been on the school’s cycling team for the past two years.

Where are you originally from, and how did you end up here in Oregon?

I am originally from Durban, South Africa but moved to Concord, California in 2002. I ended up in Oregon after doing college touring. With the major I wanted as well as endless backcountry to explore I pretty much knew I was going to end up here.

Why do you love cycling?

I love cycling for a few reasons. First off, riding your bike (especially really fast) is a ton of fun. You get to see way more stuff compared to most other forms of exercise. While a runner may run 10 miles, I can go bike 60 and see that much more stuff. I also like to push my body to its limits. When you race you push yourself both mentally and physically while having the adrenaline pumping. I think that’s pretty awesome.

Do you ever ride your bike leisurely or just competitively?

I try to do both, but most of my riding is focused around training for competition. Every few weeks I’ll go ride my bike just for the sake of it rather than to train. It keeps me balanced and from burning out. That being said, I really like to compete in the sport.

I’m sure that you’ve had the opportunity to ride your bike in a variety of different places. What are some of your favorite places to ride here in Oregon?

In Oregon the majority of beautiful places I’ve ridden are only a few miles of Eugene. My favorite ride goes up a road called Briggs Hill and descends into wineries and beautiful open fields. There are hardly any cars too. Another favorite place is in Bend. The high desert has amazing scenery as well as challenging rides.

What would you say is unique about being in Oregon compared to other places?

The unique thing I’ve found about Oregon compared to most other places is the laid back approach to life. It seems everyone isn’t as rushed as other places I’ve lived. I really enjoy that compared to fast paced life. I could very easily see myself living in Oregon in the future!
