Q&A: Kira Hoffelmeyer

kira editKira Hoffelmeyer is a full-time journalism student at the University of Oregon. She finds storytelling her main passion, and through the support of the journalism school she plans to one-day pursue her dream of being a storyteller as a career.

What was your dream job when you were younger?
When I was younger, I thought being Peter Pan was an occupation. I never wanted to grow up and I figured someone had to take his place in Neverland.

How has our dream changed?
As I’ve gotten older I’ve come to realize that both Neverland and Peter Pan don’t exist. However, I’m not sure how much my dream has really changed. Ever since I started writing about eight years ago, people have asked me what I want to do with my life, my career. And my answer to them is usually something along the lines of: “I want to sit in my pajamas all day and play with my imaginary friends.” What better way to do that than to be a writer?

What inspired you to take this path?
I guess Peter Pan is definitely an inspiration for the path I have chosen to take. That and I’ve been encouraged to write ever since I learned how. I’ve been spouting off stories since I could dream them.

Have you experienced any obstacles that prevented you from reaching your goal?
I’ve had a lot of personal difficulties that have affected the person I’ve become and the one I aspire to be. A lot of my family members have passed away from cancer, which has been a really hard thing for me. My aunt and my grandma have both been diagnosed with cancer within the last year, amongst other personal struggles this year.

How do you plan to pursue your dream?
I am currently pursuing my dreams by majoring in Journalism. I haven’t reached a point that I know exactly what I’m going to do yet, but I know I’m going to write or help other people find their writing voices.

When did you decide to take on this dream?
I think working this past year at The Emerald has truly helped steer me in the right direction. I’m still not entirely sure what I want to do professionally, but I feel that the things I’ve experienced in my personal and professional life so far will help me get there.
