Our Approach

We used standard social scientific coding procedures to ensure that we reliably obtained rates of diversity across our database of advertising agencies. The figure below describes our process. In short, we had two independent coders count the number of women, non-white individuals, and non-white women represented on agency websites (agencies collected from AgencyList.org). Pages without photos were excluded and if two coders did not agree on counts, they resolved discrepancies after discussion.

Note, there are a small number of duplicates in this dataset because some agencies have many locations across the United States. In total, we evaluated 1,624 unique agencies but retained 1,764 to be representative of the industry at large.
