Week 8_ Response to Viewings: Omar Aldakheel

In “The Good Life” project there were some interesting aspects. I thought the website with the text side by side in Spanish was great. Most of the times I like when I just switch the whole site from one language to another but here it worked to have both because the words look almost the same which shows how English is derived mostly from Latin and also because many Americans can read both English and Spanish or some Spanish and that way it helps to understand and learn the language easily. However, the blue text in English with the blue background didn’t work together very well, it would’ve been easier to read if the was a contrast in the colors. This project is different that other projects we saw in class of ordinary citizens in the street because it is not in America and also because it has that political theme to it where Americans can see how people view them overseas. I think Carlos Motta gave me an idea of how I can do my project when I’m back in the Middle East!

Also, I loved the “Post Secret” blog because I’m like many people out there and I have my secrets but I don’t want anybody to me, so sending a secret anonymously is perfect. Also, hearing the secrets of others make me identify with those people. I it’s really ironic to see that we might all have embarrassing secrets but no one wants to share them because we want to look perfect in our society and ultimately that make us look fake and not honest with others and ourselves.

In “the Hurricane Digital Memory Bank” I saw a good archive of an unforgettable historical event with many media sources. However, I just thought it took too long after I click on each collection to get to those media mediums. In other words, I was reading a lot of texts then click to read more text then click to another page of more text and then be directed to all sources of media.

    Omar,
I liked your point that you made about the interviews having perspectives from non-Americans about America. I think that this website along with others that are similar would be beneficial for high school history students to see and study. Exchange students in our high school talk about similar topics and it is always interesting to know how Americans are viewed by others. Please share the link to your project, if you are planning on creating a site like this.
