Week 1: Jamie (Schaub) Bourcier

Hi,

My name is Jamie (Schaub) Bourcier (boo-see-aye -don’t worry, the last name is new to me, too. I’m recently married and took his name), and I am in the Strategic Communications master’s program. I am very, very excited to be here, to really BE HERE. I graduated from college way back in 1997 and knew that one day I would continue my educational pursuit, but I did not have an idea in what, or where nor how. I looked into several programs, from MBA (I wanted to poke my eyes out) to Social Work (I never would have lasted). When I heard about this program, I thought “A ha! This feels right!”

Fast forward a couple of decades and here I am. HERE I am.

I currently work at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) as a Communication Coordinator. I write communication plans, manage my department’s blog, write executive announcements, build customer relationships, etcetera, etcetera… I love what I do, but I am at a point where my well of knowledge has runneth over (or perhaps in this case runneth dry); I want to learn new skills in communications, media and execution and go wherever it leads me.

I cannot wait to meet, you and take this journey with you all.

Jamie

    Jamie,
I share your enthusiasm and excitement for starting something fresh and new. My last year in college was 1996, so I will probably need some time to adjust to the rigors of grad school. I’m a MMJ student, but I’m sure we will be working together in a group someday. See you on Thursday!

Jamie, I am curious what your path was to OHSU communications work?

    Jamie,

I know how you feel about finally BEING HERE. Its a long way from where I started, but its been a good journey so far. I too am really excited about this program, and had a similar experience where I considered other paths before I finally found this one and knew it was the right one. I think that not everyone gets that aha! moment, and so I feel we are very fortunate. Really looking forward to spending the year with you 🙂

I’m actually trying to use my journalism skills — along with everything I learn in this program — to break into a communications role like the one you have. In my journalism experiences, I’ve sort of gone with where the story takes me and reacting to stories and not tried to guide the story to what a communications team wants it to be. I think it would be interesting to figure out to conceptualize and tell these stories from a communications role.

    Hi Jamie,

I’ll definitely also echo how being HERE resonates with me too. I love to look back at life and chuckle at how the choices we make, if chosen by following your truth/heart/gut, can lead you in to so many unanticipated places but how amazingly they end up feeling right. I almost went down the road of an MBA but it didn’t feel right so I ditched that plan and followed what did feel right. While a long and bumpy ride, the path I chose instead gave me the most ultimate opportunity to explore my creation potential and to really see on my own, what I was made of and what I could accomplish. It’s only because of choosing that, albeit a little bit crazy, path that I have ended up here; where my vision, inspirations and insatiable need to dig deeper feel like it’s coming together. Cheers to being here!
