Disconnected. As connected as we are with technology, we are disconnected more than ever with nature. Water. Water stands for inspiration, for creation, for giving birth to ideas, longings and hopes, for moving and for changing; because if water stands still, it will rot.
Everyone has their own personal sense of place. Some may create it in their mind or have a specific location where they find tranquility, pleasure and feel content. I find my sense of peace through water. Lakes, oceans, rivers, any kind of body of water, really. To the violent, unpredictable and uncontrollable oceans and waterfalls, to the picturesque, calm and beautiful streams. However, my true sense of peace is found through the presence of lakes, the perfect balance.
It began before I could walk and even process the feeling of the humid, mosquito infested Midwest summers on Lake Beulah, Wisconsin surrounded by family I only see once a year. This lake was just another annual summer vacation destination to many wealthy property owners from Chicago, but it was and still is the permanent residence and holder of my dearest memories.
The lake; where I learned how to swim my first time, where I learned to water ski at six years old, where I went on my first boat ride, saw my first firework, and other things I wish I remembered and could appreciate at the time. I can’t help but feel at home and feel nothing but bliss in the presence of any body of water surrounded by those I love. A sense of protection casts over me, like I can’t be harmed or touched, which is ironic since water is one of the most powerful driving forces in the world.
Rest, tranquillity and relaxation. My mind automatically morphs into a state of euphoria watching the steady ripples of the lake melodically colliding with the dockside. I dip my toes into what resembles bathwater heated by the stinging of the summer sun. And then dusk, the beautiful neon orange sun magnifying the skyline and reflecting off the water looking as if it is setting right into it.
Nature is the essence of our being. I find when I am with my loved ones outside our regular hectic life in the city for a getaway, I go wide-eyed as I see how everyones vibes change. By the water, I am home. Transformation, subconscious, purification, reflection, renewal, motion, life, water is beautifully calm and beautifully violent, unpredictable and uncontrollable, such is life.
