Dear Keelan,
The last 6 months have been some of the best of my life. You must come to America. As much as I enjoy it, life back home is hardly thrilling. And coming over here will change your life.
Nothing will compare to hearing Barack Obama speak on the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington. Watching him captivate a crowd for half an hour is something I will never forget, and something I could have only experienced because of travel.
Audio of some of Barack Obama’s speech begins plays, over photos of the event.
It’s not just one off events like that either. Walking through the concrete jungle that is New York really puts things into perspective, especially in comparison to Melbourne.
It really is a different culture over here, I would never want to travel to our parliament house but going to the Capitol Building was at the top of my list. Also seeing the respect people pay to fallen soldiers and leaders at Arlington cemetery is quite inspiring.
I can’t forget the sport either, I know going to the footy on Friday night is one thing but sitting at a packed out Fenway Park is another, the crowd just has a different feel to it.
Audio of the crowd a Fenway park plays, over photos of the game.
Watching Rodger Federer at flushing meadows is just another experience that blows our sporting events out of the water.
Audio of a tennis match plays over photos.
There is also the Ducks, college football is as good as you made it out to be.
Travel is one of the rewarding experiences you will ever have, getting lost in a foreign city and wondering around for hours is so satisfying. If I asked you what you did today, what would your answer be, I went to work? Sat at home and watched TV? It’s so easy to fall into the trap of accepting that mundane life.
Wouldn’t you rather reply with I walked from one end of Philadelphia to the other, or I took a paddle boat down the Mississippi?
This is why I am begging with you, pleading with you. You must travel. The things you see the people you meet will stay with you for the rest of your life. And really what is the worst that could happen?
See you soon
Liam
