Character Profile Pitches

Arbor South Architecture Pitch

SUBJECT: I want to write a story about one Arbor South Architecture, an environmentally focused design company. This would include its founders Dan Hill and Bill Randal

THEME: The theme is sustainable design, and changes that can be made within the industry to promote design that is environmentally friendly.

ANGLE: I plan to focus on what it is in the designs that makes the houses environmentally friendly and why the company holds the value of sustainability so high.

STORY: I plan to tell this story by interviewing the founders, asking them what they incorporate into their designs and back that with visual examples of some of the work they have produced.  I will also cover the process from idea to finished product

WHAT KIND OF STORY:  this will be a feature piece about the company, it will be written in third person.

FIVE KEY SCENES AND THE POINTS THEY ILLUSTRATE:

  1. One on one interview with founder/s talking about their philosophy. Why? This introduces the founders and company and gets to the most significant aspect of the story, the sustainability.
  2. The design process, this would include drawings, and models. Why? This show the formation of ideas as well as the variety of ideas the company has, as not all designs result in a finished product
  3. A building being constructed. Why? This show the actual implementation of the sustainable practices. And what has to be done to increase sustainability.
  4. A finished product, most likely a house or building. Why? This shows the finished product and how the sustainable features were implemented with visually appealing design. It also allows the founders to show as well as explain some of the sustainable features.
  5. Scenes of the founders/employees in action, this could include them drawing or visiting  a site etc. Why? This shows actual work being done, change up from the talk about how sustainable measures should be implemented in ‘theory’.

 EQUIPMENT NEEDED:

-Digital SLR Camera

-Audio Recorder

-Video Camera

SOURCES: My main sources would be Dan Hill and Bill Randal, the founders of Arbor South Architecture. Other sources may be some of their customers who have built the sustainable homes that Arbor South Architecture have designed

MARKET:  I’d like to sell this article to an environmental magazine or an architecture magazine.

QUALIFICATIONS: I’m qualified to tell this story because I completed two years of a journalism degree.

Don Essig Pitch

SUBJECT: I want to do a story on Don Essig, the announcer at Autzen Stadium.

THEME: The theme is the people behind the scenes at Autzen Stadium, every game day hundreds of people are involved in creating the experience and often no thought is given to those people by the spectators.

ANGLE: I plan to focus on the history of Don’s work, he has worked there since 1968, I will also focus on what his job involves.

STORY:  I plan to tell this story by following Don on game day, from the start of the day before he leaves for the game all the way through the game, until after the game. I would also interview him outside of game day about his experiences in the job, to add more to the background of the story.

WHAT KIND OF STORY:  The story will be a behind the scenes story, following Don in backdrop to the game. There will also be combined with a profile of Don exploring his experiences and the history of Autzen.

FIVE KEY SCENES AND THE POINTS THEY ILLUSTRATE:

  1. Don before the game his preparation and trip to the game. Why? Game day is a normally a big event for most this will show that it is the same for Don, it will also show the work he puts in, he does not just turn up and call the game.
  2. Pre-game behind the scenes, particularly in the callers box. Why? This continues the narrative of Don’s day; it will also introduce other people who work behind the scenes, such as his spotters. It also sets the scene for the game.
  3. “It never rains in Autzen” Why? This is the now famous saying that Don coined, it is announced before every game and has become a tradition. It is what he is most known for.
  4. In game announcing  Why? This is the heart of the story; this is what Don actually does and what the story is about.
  5. Post-game, and trip home. Why? This illustrates that it is more than just a job to Don, is he excited that the team, is he sad that they lost or does he just forget about it when he gets home.

 EQUIPMENT NEEDED:

-Digital SLR Camera

-Audio recorder

-Video camera

SOURCES: My main and probably only source will be Don, as I am following him through his day. However I could also include his spotters as they help him do his job. I also may include his family for the scenes before and after the game.

MARKET: I’d like to sell this multimedia piece to the Register-Guard, it could also be sold to sports publications such as Sports Illustrated

QUALIFICATIONS: I am qualified for this story because I have completed two years of a journalism degree and, have experience covering sporting events having written for two sporting publications in Australia.
