#7 Character Proposal

#7 Character Proposal

STORYTELLING PITCH

Pitch #1

SUBJECT: I want to write a story about Harry McHugh (or Sam Arabian) regarding his involvement with creating the “Scoducks” clothing-line sold at the Duck Store.

THEME: The underlying theme is starting a business as a student and how he has excelled in it. Also, I want to tie in how he dropped out of school to focus on this business as his career.

ANGLE:  I plan to focus on the challenges he has faced throughout the business. Also, his story as to how he started the business and how he got his ideas and his inspiration.

STORY: I plan to tell this story by filming him while making the “scoducks” apparel and stickers. I’ll also include interviews, voiceovers and audio of natural sound. I want to tell the full story by doing an interview and him actually making his products and explaining his process.

WHAT KIND OF STORY:  I envision this as a personal profile story to give an insight to what creating a business is like. It will be written in third person with McHugh as the main character in the story.

FIVE KEY SCENES AND THE POINTS THEY ILLUSTRATE:

  1. Open with him using the print press he has to create shirts and stickers. Why? To create an establishing shot to give the audience a sense of what he does from the start of the video.
  2. Film inside the Duck Store and get video of his apparel on display. Why? To give his business a location and help people realize he is the one that started the popular “scoducks” brand.
  3. Pictures/video of his workspace and where he created his clothes. Why? To illustrate his lifestyle and show the audience his creative space.
  4. Interview with McHugh. Why? To give him a close-up in his documentary and to show the audience his face and his personality.
  5. Show his process and what he does day by day. Why? To show what he does outside of his business and to show that he is just a normal person like everyone else.

EQUIPMENT NEEDED:

  1. Camera for Photography
  2. Video Camera with Tripod
  3. Audio recorder DSLR
  4. Microphone with wind protector

SOURCES:  My main source is McHugh, but I could also interview his business partner Sam Arabian who he works with.

MARKET: I’d like to make it go public maybe through the business school, that way this video can encourage people to actively pursue what it is they want to do as a career.

QUALIFICATIONS: I’m qualified to tell this story because I’ve had experience in covering people’s stories via multimedia. I think I will be able to tell McHugh’s story because I have experience in reporting and writing.

Pitch #2

SUBJECT: I want to write a story about a member of the a cappella group “On The Rocks” or OTR at the University of Oregon. (Potentially: Connor Eggerman/Brandon Mai/ Clay Attig)

THEME: The underlying theme is performing for an audience and expressing/pursuing singing as a talent.

ANGLE: I plan to focus on how a capella works and what it is like to perform this type of music for an audience. I want to focus on what made them want to join the group and how they started singing.

STORY: I plan to tell this story by filming their Friday shows and them at practice doing their warm-ups and choreography.  I’ll also include interviews, voiceovers and audio of natural sound.

WHAT KIND OF STORY:  I envision this as a personal profile story to give an insight into performing and pursuing one’s passion. It will be written in third person with one member of OTR as the main character in the story.

FIVE KEY SCENES AND THE POINTS THEY ILLUSTRATE:

  1. Start with audio/video of them singing and performing on their Friday show. Why? To engage the viewer at the start and to give the audience a sense of the atmosphere at an OTR show.
  2. Film a member at rehearsal during a solo. Why? To show the member singing and show how talented he is.
  1. Pictures/video of him performing his solo at the show. Why? To illustrate his talent and to show him in action.
  2. Interview with OTR member. Why? To give a close-up of him and to show the audience his face and his personality through him talking and answering questions during the interview.
  3. Show the member’s process and what he does other than OTR. Why? To show what he wants to do with his talent and what else he is doing with his time.

EQUIPMENT NEEDED:

  1. Camera for Photography
  1. Video Camera with Tripod
  2. Audio recorder DSLR
  3. Microphone with wind protector

SOURCES: My main sources are the OTR members. I can also interview the members that aren’t the main one (let’s say Connor) and can have them talk about Connor’s personality and his singing.

MARKET: I’d like to make it go public maybe through the University. It could encourage people to actively pursue their passions and explore their talents. Also could be a source of advertising for OTR.

QUALIFICATIONS: I’m qualified to tell this story because I’ve had experience in covering people’s story via multimedia. I think I will be able to tell a member of OTR’s story because I have experience in reporting and writing.
