Greek Week Parade 2013

The University of Oregon Fraternity and Sorority Life hosts a “Greek Week” with a different theme every year. This year’s theme is “Television Channels” where two to three chapters are paired together to represent a different focus of the central theme. This year, Tri Delta is paired with Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Alpha Epsilon Pi, with “MTV” as their theme.

A main event during each Greek Week requires each fraternity and sorority pair to create a float based on their theme. On Friday, October 18th, Tri Delta, SAE and AEPi created an MTV-styled float with various members dressing up as famous characters from pop culture as well as specific MTV series. Some of the notable costumes included: Miley Cyrus, the characters from “Rob and Big,” and the pregnant teenagers from “16 and Pregnant.”

Fifth-year senior in SAE, Billy Shanks, arrived to the parade wearing only American-themed suspenders, glasses and an American flag speedo. As the new members of SAE got to know Shanks, they all laughed with him as he paraded around in his American-themed outfit. Shanks is one of many outgoing Fraternity men who is not afraid to be himself and dress risque for a competition.
The Sigma Chi Fraternity’s new puppy, Norman, made an appearance at the Greek Week Parade this year. It has become a common theme for fraternities to showcase their fraternity dog at campus events. All of the sororities came running and cheering at the sight of Norman. He was perceived as a crowd favorite amongst the three other fraternity dogs present.

Members of both SAE and AEPi patiently await the start of the Greek Week Parade that proceeds down 13th Avenue through campus. The MTV float was the front of the Greek float procession with the nine other floats preceding. The members of Tri Delta, SAE and AEPi sat while members of the Greek Week Panel judged each float separately. Although the MTV float did not place in the float decoration rankings, the members enjoyed being a part of the Homecoming Parade.
